Partnering with Keystone Health,\u00a0which provides health services to migrant agricultural workers, the students sold raffle tickets over a two-week period\u00a0to raise funds for the local nonprofit.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership with Keystone grew out of a service-learning program undertaken by\u00a0students in\u00a0Spanish\u00a0lecturer Asuncion Arnedo-Aldrich\u2019s Spanish for the Health Professions\u00a0course. In recent years, students in the class\u00a0have worked closely with Keystone to provide interpreters to assist patients at clinics, migrant camps and dental clinics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of our class, we read \u2018Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies: Migrant Farmworkers in the United States\u2019\u00a0by\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Seth Holmes, and the irony\u00a0presented by the book\u00a0was that the workers for whom we interpreted were picking fresh fruits and vegetables that we eat to stay healthy,\u00a0but the workers\u00a0sometimes have difficulty meeting very basic, primary care needs,\u201d explains Ryan Murphy \u201920 (biochemistry &amp; molecular biology), president of the Spanish Club.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the community&#8217;s health care needs firsthand inspired the students to take further action. \u201cStudents have seen the hardworking laborers at the apple orchard camps.
