{"id":1356,"date":"2020-10-23T09:02:20","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T13:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/spanishandportuguese\/?p=1356"},"modified":"2020-10-28T22:51:07","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T02:51:07","slug":"save-the-date-dia-de-los-muertos-day-of-the-dead-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/spanishandportuguese\/2020\/10\/23\/save-the-date-dia-de-los-muertos-day-of-the-dead-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"SAVE THE DATE:  D\u00eda de los Muertos\/Day of the Dead Celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At<b>\u00a04:30 PM on Friday, October 30<\/b>, there will an outdoor, socially distanced \u201cDay of the Dead\u201d celebration on campus.\u00a0\u00a0This will be an opportunity for a few on-campus students to step out for a seasonal treat (hot chocolate + sweets) and contribute to a pop-up altar.\u00a0Protocols and permissions are currently being negotiated, and\u00a0<u>m<\/u><u>ore details will follow<\/u>.\u00a0The event is co-sponsored by LALC and the Dept. of Spanish &amp; Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create\u00a0<b><i>ofrendas<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(Offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations!<\/p>\n<p>Day of the Dead is a rare holiday for celebrating death and life.
