In January 2021 new virtual program offerings for Dickinson alumni became available. Alumni can explore the world from the safety and convenience of home through live, interactive, global courses developed just for them. Dickinson experts in Argentina<\/a>, Brazil<\/a>, Denmark<\/a>, England<\/a>, France<\/a>, Germany<\/a>, Italy<\/a>, Russia<\/a> and Spain<\/a> will present five fun and in-depth courses focusing on global cities, people and cultures. The courses are open to alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends of the college. Each includes several classes taught by Dickinson professors, staff and friends of the college living all around the world.<\/p>\n

Here is a sampling from Spanish and Portuguese programs:<\/a><\/p>\n

Picasso and Las Vanguardias: The Avant-Garde and Contemporary Spanish Culture<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Tuesday, Feb. 9, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
\nDiscuss\u00a0Picasso, the avant-garde and what they can teach us about contemporary Spanish culture.\u00a0Hosted by Jose Lebrero Stals, artistic director of the Museo Picasso M\u00e1laga, with a moderated Q&A by Mark Aldrich<\/a>, associate professor of Spanish and the executive director of the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues.<\/p>\n

M\u00e1laga en la Mesa: From the Mountains to the Beach<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0Wednesday, Feb. 24, 11 a.m.-noon
\nExploring the city\u2019s food scene. Led from M\u00e1laga\u00a0<\/strong>by Nedra Sandiford \u201910, program coordinator, Dickinson-in-Spain.<\/p>\n

Simply Put: It’s All About Tasting Wine<\/strong><\/a> – Thursday, April 15, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
\nLearn about world viticulture, regions,\u00a0varieties and\u00a0wine production and tastings. Then taste a cabernet sauvignon. Led from Mendoza, Argentina, by Alfredo Draqueis, agronomist of UNCUYO, National University of Cuyo.<\/p>\n

Argentinean History, Immigration, Tango and Lunfardo<\/em><\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0Tuesday, April 6, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
\nKnowledge of Spanish is essential for this class, which includes listening to music and analyzing lyrics and discussing\u00a0the creation of Argentina State,\u00a0the impact of immigration waves\u00a0and the histories and importance of the tango and lunfardo<\/em>. Led by Eliana Torres, Dickinson\u2019s resident director in Argentina.<\/p>\n

Brazil: Mixture of Cultures<\/a> <\/strong>– Wednesday, April 14, 3-4 p.m.
\nExploring how Brazil\u2019s racial mixture can help us understand this huge country. Led by Marcelo Borges<\/a>, professor of history and the Boyd Lee Spahr Chair in the History of the Americas.<\/p>\n

Sustainability Beyond Carlisle I: Permaculture and Grassroots Sustainable Initiatives in M\u00e1laga<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>Wednesday, March 17, 10-11 a.m.
\nPart one of a two-part class led\u00a0by M\u00e1laga Program Coordinator Nedra Sandiford with input from\u00a0Lecturer in Spanish Asunci\u00f3n Arnedo-Aldrich, exploring how local groups and nonprofits promote sustainable systems\u00a0and highlighting\u00a0sustainable, local activities\u00a0that\u00a0Dickinson study-abroad students participate in.<\/p>\n

How to Discover Other Sides of a Country Through Study Abroad<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0Wednesday, May 12, 3-4 p.m.
\nPresenting the ways students discover new career paths and gain interpersonal skills, career opportunities and job prospects through study abroad. Led by Giselda Pereira, resident director of Dickinson\u2019s Brazil study-abroad program and a Dickinson contributing faculty member.<\/p>\n
