Alexandra Fosbury \u201921 will teach English in Argentina, and Jacqueline Amezcua \u201919 will teach\u00a0in Brazil.<\/p>\n<h3>REALIZING A DREAM<\/h3>\n<p>Fosbury double majors in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/132\/political_science\">political science<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/42\/philosophy\">philosophy<\/a>, with a minor in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/107\/spanish_and_portuguese\">Spanish<\/a>. She\u2019s involved at Dickinson as co-editor-in-chief of\u00a0<em>The Dickinsonian<\/em>, a Liberty Cap\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/611\/tour_guides\">tour guide<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/287\/admissions\">admissions<\/a>\u00a0intern, student-interviewer, student-mentor and Delta Nu member. She\u00a0has planned to pursue a Fulbright since high school, when she first heard her older cousin share stories of her own Fulbright experiences in Bulgaria. With help from Dickinson\u2019s Fulbright program advisors and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/1248\/center_for_advising_internships_and_lifelong_careers\">Center for Advising, Internships &amp; Lifelong Career Development<\/a>, she tackled the long and complex application process early\u00a0and with relative ease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDickinson\u2019s Fulbright program advisors were so incredible at keeping us on top of our work and allowing us to submit our application prior to the Fulbright deadline so that we could ensure there were no errors,\u201d she says. \u201cTheir unwavering support throughout the process made it much more manageable and enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageCaption \">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/images\/aly_headshot_700w.jpg\" alt=\"Alexandra Fosbury '21\" \/>Alexandra Fosbury &#8217;21<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>When she received her Fulbright acceptance letter last February, Fosbury admits that she had to read it a few times before it sank in. \u201cIt initially felt a bit unreal,\u201d she explains. \u201cOnce I realized it was in fact real, I did honestly cry a bit and called my mom right away to let her know I was a finalist. It was an extreme moment of pride but also an overwhelming feeling of nervousness and excitement for what lies ahead for me in Argentina.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>FOCUSED PERSPECTIVE<\/h3>\n<p>Amezcua is a trainer for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/info\/20050\/diversity_and_inclusion\/1389\/posse_at_dickinson\">Posse Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and a former Dickinson Posse Scholar and double major in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/38\/latin_american_latinx_and_caribbean_studies\">Latin American, Latinx &amp; Caribbean studies<\/a>\u00a0and Spanish. She was also a foreign-language tutor, co-founder the college\u2019s Latina Discussion Group and Spanish-language student-coordinator at The Trout Gallery. In 2019, she pursued her interest in combining the arts and social justice when she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/news\/article\/3570\/student-curated_art_and_civic_engagement_exhibition_creates_space_to_talk\">curated a Trout exhibition of social-justice themed works<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Amezcua first considered applying for a Fulbright as a Dickinson junior, but it took a few years for that idea to crystalize, and for her to gather the courage to apply. After exploring Brazilian culture as an undergrad and taking a remote global-history course this past year,\u00a0after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/news\/article\/4437\/remote_learning_brings_multigenerational_perspectives_to_classes_at_dickinson_college\">Dickinson opened up remote\u00a0classes to alumni<\/a>, she realized that she could channel her passions for art, museums and language\u00a0and cultural learning as a Fulbrighter in Brazil.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageCaption\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/images\/J.Amezcua_700w.jpg\" alt=\"Jacqueline Amezcua '19\" \/>Jacqueline Amezcua &#8217;19<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI told myself that even if I didn&#8217;t receive the grant, the application process itself was worthwhile,\u201d she recalls. \u201cIt really pushes you to self-reflect and think about what you want your next steps to be, why, and the impact you want your work to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>IN DISTINGUISHED COMPANY<\/h3>\n<p>As\u00a0finalists, Fosbury and Amezcua have been offered grants to serve as Fulbright ETAs. When their medical and terms of agreement paperwork is complete, they will be officially named Fulbrighters.<\/p>\n<p>That places them in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/news\/article\/4240\/\">distinguished and growing community<\/a>\u00a0of Dickinsonians who have taken part in the prestigious Fulbright program, the largest and most diverse international exchange program in the world. The U.S. Department of State has recognized Dickinson as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/news\/article\/4580\/\">top Fulbright-producing institution<\/a>\u00a0eight times during the past 10 years, and more than 20 graduating seniors have earned Fulbright awards during the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>Both Fosbury and Amezcua encourage students to apply for opportunities like these, and both\u00a0thank the Dickinson advisors who helped them navigate every step of the application process.\u00a0\u201cThe amount of support I received from the committee and my professors made it much easier, and I want to give a big \u2018thank you\u2019 to them.
