On Thursday, November 13, the Department of Spanish’s Fall 2014 writer-in-residence, acclaimed novelist Antonio Soler, presented an event (in Spanish) entitled “En torno a mi proceso creativo: or\u00edgenes y trayectoria de Lil\u00ed.” The event took place at 7PM in Bosler 208.<\/p>\n
Soler read his short story “Lil\u00ed” and then discussed the story in the context of his creative process.<\/p>\n
Here is the opening to his story:<\/p>\n
“El nombre verdadero de la bailarina Lil\u00ed era Hortensia Ruiz, y aunque en realidad nunca llegu\u00e9 a conocerla, supe los entresijo de su historia gracias a mi hermano, que siempre hab\u00eda querido ser artista y se hab\u00eda ido a Barcelona para trabajar en un cabaret y de ese modo cumplir su sue\u00f1o.”<\/p>\n
Antonio Soler\u00a0is the author of eleven novels. He has also published thousands of opinion articles in\u00a0Diario Sur\u00a0and\u00a0El Mundo. Soler has been awarded several of Spain’s major literary prizes, including the Nadal Prize for his 2004 novel\u00a0El camino de los ingleses\u00a0(later a film directed by Antonio Banderas, for which Soler himself created the screenplay), the Premio Primavera in 1999 for\u00a0El nombre que ahora digo, and the National Critics Prize in 1997 for\u00a0Las bailarinas muertas. Soler was a Dickinson writer-in-residence in 2000 and returns fourteen years later to continue work on his twelfth novel.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
