First, western (American) influence in MENA has largely been resisted by indigenous Arab\u2019s due to western <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">discontent towards the region. Second, the cultural influence of Islam is not agreed upon by contemporary scholars, as <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MENA countries do not have solely Muslim populations. The effect that the Islamic religion has on the emergence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of democracy is skeptical at best.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When examined, the region\u2019s newly formed democracies are fraught with issues<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lebanon\u2019s mass protests and governmental negotiations, Tunisia\u2019s free and fair elections, and Iraq\u2019s (outside) controlled elections.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0This is where the problem lies. There is no correlation between Islam and democracy. Countries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0particularly in this region<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0oft<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">en exhibit <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unexpected combinations of some form of democracy and authoritarianism. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Democratization<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is a process that stalls and starts.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Outside sources are the only examples of real<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">world democracies individuals in the MENA region <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> emulate. The existing democracies such as the U.S., the U.K, Germany, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">etc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 are all existing democracies th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at MENA can use as a reference for their own regimes. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Information <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">about<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the Arab world from the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">World Values survey<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> indicates that although MENA <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">states may be hesitant to embrace westernization, they value democracy much more than citizens of actual democracies do.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-27\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/sternd\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-30-at-1.08.27-PM-300x188.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/sternd\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-30-at-1.08.27-PM-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/sternd\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-30-at-1.08.27-PM-768x482.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/sternd\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-30-at-1.08.27-PM.png 1008w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hart here illustrates <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the inc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reased favor democracy has with MENA states since the Arab Springs<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"> https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/menasource\/do-arabs-want-democracy\/<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In order for<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">democratization<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to be <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">successful<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it must occur <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">intrinsically<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> within society. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is why<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Iraq\u2019s American-funded reconstruction has largely been a disaster<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
