The journey must never be considered as an end in itself. Traveling for the sake of traveling serves no purpose. Traveling is above all, a way of plunging headfirst into new and different relationships.

But who are these new people? Why are they so different from me? Should I approach them? If so, how? These others are quite simply the inhabitants of this new country that begs to be discovered who were raised in the French culture, who are fed baguettes and know classical music like the back of their hands. No self-respecting French person would hold back in singing along this famous lyric by Edith Piaf: “Quand il me prend dans ses bras, qu’il me parle tout bas, je vois la vie en rose.”

The American students of the Dickinson en France international exchange program have the opportunity to interact with the French who have a very different culture; a culture that they are very proud of. Witnessing the Journées du Patrimoine or Days of Heritage, once a year French citizens are permitted to see behind the doors of the most celebrated monuments of the country. Hung, who is quite interested in French cultural heritage, had the chance to visit the famous Toulouse capital building the former seat of power of the Capitouls. These heritage days are an occasion for some to rediscover, for others to discover the global scope of French cultural influence. The romantic image of France, represented by the padlocks which seal a couple’s love on Paris’s Pont des Arts, explains why it is the most visited country in the world, with 32 tourists per citizen in 2014. Zachary noted that, while strolling on the banks of the Seine, a lover cannot resist the temptation of this bridge. The desire to leave a symbol of unconditional and eternal love on the bridge is stronger than anything else, often to the detriment of the preservation of the historical monument. This bridge was, in reality, threatened by the weight of thousands of padlocks before the city government decided to remove them.

The Days of Heritage are precious in the lives of the French, and are often exhausting for those who take full advantage of every opportunity. When the monuments close comes the time for people to return home, some by car and the more eco-friendly by bus. This type of public transport allows us to realize the extent of the role of politeness in French culture. Despite some impolite passengers, Jillian realized that a ritualized practice exists in Toulousian buses. Rare are those who don’t say “Merci, au revoir” to the conductors. The drivers are essential to the proper functioning of public transit, and more than taking people from point A to point B, they are a symbol of sustainable transportation.

Once at home, relaxation takes hold, which means to spend time with family, especially sharing meals. France is very attached to the idea of eating all together. Once more, Dickinson students were able to have this experience. However, there is a caveat in this idyllic picture – the time that meals are eaten appear very late from an outsider’s prospective. If there exists an expression that says, “eating like the Spanish” to characterize long meals, the French are equally guilty. Lily made a point to notice the cultural difference regarding meals and the required adaptation. She highlighted the importance that meals have for the French, and she noted the necessity of not snacking to better appreciate time spent eating together.

If Alexandra David Neel was right, she would confirm that Dickinson students are not just traveling but are well and journeying!

Tels étaient les mots d’Alexandra David Neel (1868-1969), journaliste, écrivaine et exploratrice française.
