Stafford.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-feature-hd\">\n<h2 class=\"c-hdgSans c-hdgSans_2 c-mix-hdgSans_inline\">Traveling through the Dark<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-feature-sub c-feature-sub_vast\">\n<div><span class=\"c-txt c-txt_attribution\">BY WILIAM E. STAFFORD, 1998<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-feature-bd\">\n<div class=\"o-poem  isActive\" data-view=\"PoemView\">\n<div>Traveling through the dark I found a deer<\/div>\n<div>dead on the edge of the Wilson River road.<\/div>\n<div>It is usually best to roll them into the canyon:<\/div>\n<div>that road is narrow; to swerve might make more dead.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>By glow of the tail-light I stumbled back of the car<\/div>\n<div>and stood by the heap, a doe, a recent killing;<\/div>\n<div>she had stiffened already, almost cold.<\/div>\n<div>I dragged her off; she was large in the belly.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>My fingers touching her side brought me the reason\u2014<\/div>\n<div>her side was warm; her fawn lay there waiting,<\/div>\n<div>alive, still, never to be born.<\/div>\n<div>Beside that mountain road I hesitated.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The car aimed ahead its lowered parking lights;<\/div>\n<div>under the hood purred the steady engine.<\/div>\n<div>I stood in the glare of the warm exhaust turning red;<\/div>\n<div>around our group I could hear the wilderness listen.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I thought hard for us all\u2014my only swerving\u2014,<\/div>\n<div>then pushed her over the edge into the river.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the pairing, Su writes:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What\u2019s odd about the pairing is that I know the mountain to be in Japan, while Stafford\u2019s poem takes place in the sort of location with a &#8216;Wilson River road,&#8217; and the mountain in the print looks wintry, while we don\u2019t know the weather in the poem. I take the weather to be mild because there\u2019s no description of it.<\/p>\n<p>Combining the arrow sign with the poem makes the print more ominous \u2013 it suggests that a traveler ought to go up there and find a dead but still pregnant deer on a precipice. Why on earth would this experience be desirable? It isn\u2019t, but maybe the realization that follows it is valuable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What do you think about this pairing?
