{"id":824,"date":"2021-01-10T12:00:11","date_gmt":"2021-01-10T12:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/trouttalk\/?p=824"},"modified":"2021-01-06T15:41:31","modified_gmt":"2021-01-06T15:41:31","slug":"student-snapshot-emily-benson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/trouttalk\/2021\/01\/10\/student-snapshot-emily-benson\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Snapshot: Emily Benson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Student Snapshot<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Emily Benson, \u201821 American Studies Major<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before attending Dickinson College<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">I had <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">no interest in studying art <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">history<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211; <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> just<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">seemed too pretentious to me<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> my sophomore year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at Dickinson<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> I stepped<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> out of my comfort zone<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and into the halls of Weiss<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Center for the Arts, where <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I took <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a course <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">titled <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gender and Sexuality in Modern American Art<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> loved <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">historica<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">l <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">contextualization <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of art pieces<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">fascinated me<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">favorite thing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> about American Studies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is when my courses connect with each other in unexpected ways, and I saw<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a similar dynamic <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in this art history course<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Part of this is because in both <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">disciplines<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> students are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">encouraged<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">use <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scholarly sources outside of the specific field of study<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nterdisciplinary study is vital, in my opinion, for truly understanding either an artwork or an aspect of American culture.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Our lives are interdisciplinary, why should our studies not be?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I became increasingly interested in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">art history<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> after my semester abroad in Bologna,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Italy,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> when I took my second art history class<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which featured Italian art (would have been a crime if it did not!)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Apart from just learning the historical context <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">about the works, we got to get ou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t of the classroom and try to keep up with our <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fast-paced<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> professor as we bounced in and out of churches and museums around the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-825\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-825\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/trouttalk\/files\/2021\/01\/Screen-Shot-2021-01-07-at-11.29.33-AM-300x223.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/trouttalk\/files\/2021\/01\/Screen-Shot-2021-01-07-at-11.29.33-AM-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/trouttalk\/files\/2021\/01\/Screen-Shot-2021-01-07-at-11.29.33-AM-81x60.png 81w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/trouttalk\/files\/2021\/01\/Screen-Shot-2021-01-07-at-11.29.33-AM.png 698w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In Assisi, after touring the Basilica of San Francesco d\u2019Assisi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I loved our class trips to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">museums<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I was <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">able to see<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">history and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">art right in front of my eyes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; I knew then that this <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was something I wanted to keep experiencing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> when I returned to Carlisle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thus, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> began to research opportunities I could <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pursue <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at Dickinson where I could learn the histories and contexts of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> art pieces<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Of course, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the ideal place to do that was back in Weiss at the Trout Gallery<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a graduating senior thinking about career paths, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> beg<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">u<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n to consider a profession in museum studies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> what <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exactly is still unbeknownst to me. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the position o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f Museum Education Intern <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at the Trout Gallery<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> struck a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">chord<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and sounded <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">like<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">something I would <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be interested in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a Museum Interpretation Assistant this semester, it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a tad different because of the virtual set up, but I have really enjoyed the opportunity to work on my writing, public speaking, and research skills in a work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">place setting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">thing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> I worked on was a children\u2019s art project using surrealist concepts to create a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">greeting card, which I was able to be <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">creative<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ith<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> while simultaneously expanding my own knowledge of surrealism and my writing skills for younger kids (not the formal writing for essays I am used to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">doing)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My group this semester also led two Trout Un-Mutes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (one abou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> surrealism and another about <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">exploring gender, identity, and sexuality through the photographs of Lissa Rivera)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which are virtual<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, student-led events<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 They feature <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">behind the scenes access to conversations, research, and creative <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">inspirations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Trout<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The main project<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> I worked on this semester was a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> virtual<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> artist talk with Steve Prince<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 After <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I introduced him<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Prince <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">talked about<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> his <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">art projects <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and the influences in his life that have shaped his work. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t the end of his <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">talk,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">moderated questions from the audience including some <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I had prepared<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0 I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ask<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prince his opinion <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">about the importance of art in society today<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which I have taken an interest in<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">because I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">believe <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">art <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">very representative <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and expressive <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of societal issues and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n important<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> tool to use for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">larger conversations and debates<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To prepare for the Prince talk, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I researched <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> history <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> artist and his past pro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">jects by watching and reading past interviews, as well as reading some o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f the conversations in scholarly work his artwork was mentioned in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fter meeting with my <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">team<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> member<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (we work in teams a lot at The Trout)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Gracyn, I<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">condensed the many paths of research for this project down to the aspects of Prince\u2019s work that really caught my attention, namely the connection between art and social justice <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and activism. After writing my preliminary introduction and questions, they were edited by <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gracyn, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Curator <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">E<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ducation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and the Museum Communications and Events Coordinator<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">I, personally, enjoy the editing process because it helps to expand on areas that might not be my strong suit or areas of interest <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or research <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I may not have considered previously.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Working <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as a team<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has helped me <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">see how I can work better with others; I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">understand when I need to step back, as well as step up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in group projects<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a graduating senior about to enter the \u201creal world,\u201d I know that I will <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reflect upon what I have learned through the Trout and this position to assist me postgrad in incorporating art into my everyday life.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student Snapshot\u00a0 Emily Benson, \u201821 American Studies Major\u00a0 Before attending Dickinson College, I had no interest in studying art history&#8211; it just seemed too pretentious to me.
