As a result of the partially virtual semester<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, many Dickinson studio art students are working from home for at least the first part of the semester. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">For her project, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gracyn has been working on a series of oil paintings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> exploring <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the psychology of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">intimacy<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">and hopes to complete ten by the time of the show <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">opening<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Emily: Gracyn, it is so good to be meeting with you virtually to <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">talk about your art<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> I would like to start by asking<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> how you go about starting a new painting? What is your process for creating a piece?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gracyn:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Usually I start out in my sketchbook. I like to look through <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">reference pictures I have saved for ideas\u2014reference photos are an artist\u2019s best friend! If I have a pose in mind that I can\u2019t find a reference for, I might take a picture of myself so I can see exactly what I\u2019m thinking. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Once I have a rough plan, I\u2019ll start painting. I b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">uild up a lot of layers with oil paint, starting with a really thin wash of color called a ground<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014this helps me pick colors that work well together <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">more easily <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">than working on a white canvas.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Then I<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201csketch\u201d out the figure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> on the canvas <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">using paint <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">keep building up layers from there<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Sometimes, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I could see<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the old paintings showing through what I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">had <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">painted on top of them. This was kind of a happy accident because it led to some cool effects and got me thinking more about how memory can be physical <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as well as menta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">l. Lisa <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Yuskavage<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is an artist whose work <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as influenced mine a lot\u2014she uses color in a similar way <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to create a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">strong sense of space and atmosphere<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that kind of disguises<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> or misleads the viewer in interpreting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> what\u2019s really going on in the painting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. I like to think my pieces take place in a kind of dream world, or in someone\u2019s memory, where things aren\u2019t quite restricted by reality and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the space is ambiguous. The viewer can fill in the blanks <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">about<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">where a scene <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is taking place and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">its<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">context<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">I like to use shadows and ghostly hands to suggest the presence of someone else, but they\u2019re also not quite there. The figures I paint are nude, but <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">not necessarily in a sexual way. There are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">definitely <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sexual<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> themes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in some of the pieces, but I also want <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">these <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">works <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> be open to multiple interpretations.
