My thinking is this: if one is chosen by lot, that is one thing, but if one is appointed that is another thing. If you are selected to leave for the infantry by lot, you cannot refuse. But if you are appointed, it is like they are \u201csending you away.\u201d In the latter case it is of course better to go to a real infantry regiment with a fighting history, where there will be things to do rather than sitting around on the Dvina.
