Merapi Volcano.<\/strong><\/p>\n

April 7th-8th. Maron.<\/em> I got here in the rain. Dr. Kemmerling is here too, he\u2019s mad about something. An exploration of Batang river. Almost the same circumstances as on February 18th. Again there is a lot of ash, a fissure at the summit, etc.<\/p>\n

Today Dr. Kemmerling spoke his mind: I am always ahead, with no respect for his position; my luggage arrived earlier and I have forgotten that I am only a watchman and he is the boss. Goodness, he really thinks, that I will take his boots off for him! I will always be a Russian colonel and nobleman. I can carry rocks, but not boots. It\u2019s sad. If I had money I would leave, but my savings have dwindled; it\u2019s time to save up again.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a long time since I\u2019ve read Russian literature. It goes in spurts, and I mostly lived off newspapers. But just then The End of the Line<\/em> by Artsybashev fell into my hands. Many truths.<\/p>\n

April 9th. Bivouac at a height of 1750 m. <\/em>I passed through the place that was destroyed on February 18th. Bivouacked on the tall edge of the ravine. The other side was a bit destroyed, but not this one. Damp, foggy. There\u2019s melancholia in my heart. The doctor has become unrecognizable. He\u2019s already finding flaws in me in relation to the hardship. It\u2019s funny\u2014me, who spent so many years camping! It\u2019s to the point that I always worry about letters, and he said that while bivouacking I would not get a single one! Indeed, this is downright abuse. Oh well, our time will come. For now, have patience Cossack, for you will become a chief.<\/p>\n

I caught a cold and I am sneezing nonstop.<\/p>\n

April 12th-16th. Maron. <\/em>The doctor left. I am alone and basking in solitude. Plant, a German, came. He brought a little gun. We were walking along the river and shooting. I haven\u2019t forgotten how and can show off some of my old tricks.<\/p>\n

April 18th. Selo Village. <\/em>I climbed from Selo to the very top of Merapi (It\u2019s my first time being so high on this side). It\u2019s bad that it was very hot, and most importantly there was caustic smoke, so it was awful. I set off from the hotel at 5:45, was at the crater at 9:10, and at the summit at 9:45. I left the crater at 11 pm and was at the hotel at 2 pm.<\/p>\n

April 19th-21st. Maron. <\/em>I set off for here at 9 am, and at 4 pm I was here.<\/p>\n

April 21st. <\/em>I explored the second river. I walked 30 km during the day.
