April 26th.<\/em> Again, at the crater. The weather is divine, and I was again admiring one of the best regions of Java along the way. The famous Garut is not far away. Today hunters came to the crater, aborigines, and I bought a blowgun for 1 guilder. I measured the depth of the lake: not more than 7 meters. I am writing letters and drawing. I am working on accounts, a report. I wrote it, sent it, and feel more at ease. It rains every day after lunch. There is a lake around the tents. In the morning I did a good job of setting up a place to lay things and poured sand into the tent.<\/p>\n

I came up with an idea: I need to leave this country, and it\u2019s better in Vladivostok than anywhere else. There I can live with my sisters, work for the newspaper, and possibly join the Ussuriisky army, if the people there will be suitable. It would be possible, if I\u2019m on my assignment until August, to leave in September, but it will be cold. It will be better in March of the following year. I want to take Vasilich along with me. I need only put a little money aside. I\u2019m beginning to feel tired of roaming all over the world: I want to live peacefully and quietly in one place. Indeed, I have barely ever lived at home. Since 1913, I have not had a steady refuge: I\u2019m always here or there.<\/p>\n

May 6th. <\/em>Reading the newspaper The Word<\/em>, in regards to the White Army, I see that that over there is a tendency to continue the idea of an absolute monarchy. God please let there be a monarchy, but of course, a constitutional one. What guarantee is there that the monarchy won\u2019t resemble the old one, which had many sins. One cannot deny that there was little spent on public education, in-fighting was prevalent in the army, protectionism flourished, and \u201cmama\u2019s boys,\u201d even if they were idiots, were governors. In The Word<\/em>, in regard to the Whites, there is a note that they are disarmed, and that the government agreed to the explosion of the Vladivostok fortress.<\/p>\n

Today I took the temperature of the hot springs (up to 70 degrees), and everything was drenched in rain. Not a single day goes by without rain.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>May 9-16th.<\/em> Yesterday and today were delightful lunar nights. They were so bright, that one could even read. I passed the time either going on explorations of the hot springs or writing \u201csignboards\u201d that point the way. Kenir is a delightful place, and the hot springs of extraordinary intensity are +83 degrees. In the evening, like always, there was a downpour and thunderstorm, as if by clockwork.<\/p>\n

I received a letter about a payment of taxes from 1921: 12.45 guilders. Not bad.<\/p>\n

May 14th. <\/em>I became so tired while wandering around Kenir that I got back at 6 pm and by 7 pm I went to sleep.<\/p>\n

I found some new springs but broke my thermometer. And the coolie lost all of my paints, pencils, and quills. I pickled ten cucumbers in a jar from under some biscuits (with garlic and red pepper), and today I devoured almost all of them.<\/p>\n

May 18-22nd. Pasir Saninten Bivouac. <\/em>I moved here today and just built a bivouac. Along the way I saw tracks of large wild boars. It\u2019s a delightful place, at a height of 900 m. The tent is located in a low place, mountains to the right and left. In 50 m. there\u2019s a stream. \u00a0I made an amazing hut for the coolie out of bamboo and banana. In the evening there are a lot of mosquitoes here. I went along the upper edge of the crater. I had to cut a path through. In the forest there are a lot of monkeys, boars, and, unfortunately, leeches. I chased about 30-40 of them, but in spite of all that, 5 leeches had a drink of my blood.<\/p>\n

May 20th. <\/em>In the morning some kind of monstrous insect (a centipede) with a bite which, as I was told, is very dangerous, almost lethal, crawled around my legs, but my favorite chicken, which lives in the tent, attacked it. Again I cleared paths in the forest; I am very tired. There\u2019s a delightful view of the crater. Along the way I killed about 80 leeches, but one still stuck onto me. At night, grasshoppers flew in, if you can call them that; they’re about 10 cm. in size.<\/p>\n

Some strange gentleman, resembling dried twigs, is sitting on my tent; he\u2019s about 10 cm. in size, but there are others that are bigger. I received a telegram that tomorrow an engineer, Taverne, is coming to the crater. It means that I am also to go there. I\u2019m like a frightened crow now. To me it all seems like Dr. Kemmerling is upset with me and will expel me from work. Such is the fate of a Russian abroad. I chafed my feet, and they hurt from my daily walks. I am here with Ivan and one coolie. In the evening rain drums on upon the tent.<\/p>\n

May 23rd. The crater of Galungung.<\/em> The engineer Taverne arrived with 3 other gentlemen. After lunch it began: Why is the trail on Telagabodas not ready, why are the signs to the hot spring so beautifully painted, why is my trip from the city to the volcano so expensive? To the last question I replied that 20 coolies carried cement and lime, and he was satisfied. But I am deeply offended, that they could suspect such a false report. In general, they are dissatisfied. The whole time Taverne was harping that savings should be everywhere, that I should value work. I think they are just looking for a reason to fire me.
