The anniversary catches me now on my friend Merapi: I arrived at the bivouac, built a \u201cpondok\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>, and now I am laying down, because the wind is hellish, rocks are rolling, and the dust is awful.<\/p>\n<p>Vasilich is leaving.<\/p>\n<p><em>August 26th. <\/em>I went to the summit and was nearly killed by rocks flying from the summit. It\u2019s worse than artillery fire. At the very top I discovered a solfatara (fumarole) with a temperature of +145.<\/p>\n<p><em>September 16th. <\/em>More than anything, I hate uncertainties. I&#8217;m hanging around here, and still I don&#8217;t have any instructions. I\u2019m already fed up: the volcano is behind the clouds; the view out over the gorge is sad, where there is nothing but withered grass and rocks. I read, wrote, played, drew. I\u2019m fed up with everything. Even of the kittens and chicks. One could hang oneself from the melancholy.<\/p>\n<p>Vasilich left, and not a word from Batavia.<\/p>\n<p>Since January I&#8217;ve already moved 64 times, and I was in Batavia for only 2 weeks.<\/p>\n<p><em>September 25th.<\/em> Finally I received a telegram to return to Batavia.
