By hiding behind the Austrians, the Germans were able to escape. For some reason we relocated and ended up under the rapid firing of shrapnel, accomplishing nothing. I don\u2019t like this.<\/p>\n<p>Our Division, together with the 8<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span>\u00a0and 14<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span>, is led by Cavalry Corps General Novikov. How much we could accomplish! We sleep soundly during the night and beginning at 5 in the evening we don\u2019t disturb the Germans, always pausing for the night and never pushing forward. Why?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rewriting my diaries nearly 14 years later stirs up the past for me. How aggravating it was that\u00a0our daring cavalry would never bring the enemy to bay and saw the Hungarian hussars as their only worthy opponents. Our cavalry couldn\u2019t act because it lacked good generals. All we had were Lord Keller, Krymov, Pavlov, Erdeli, Novikov, and some\u00a0others. Even if they were burning with desire to bring glory to their Regiment, these immortal hussars often just chased them back and forth, in vain.
