su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>Today our unit was assigned to watch Sochaczew. I talked Ivanenko into shooting a couple rounds at the Austrians, who were openly digging trenches on the opposite bank of the Bzura. We dismounted our horses and left the horse-holders behind a pine grove. After walking through the grove in a skirmish line, we lay down on the edge of a sandy road that was running along the grove like a trench and worked as a natural watching point. I was in charge of this dismounted unit and got carried away by the poetry of battle.<\/p>\n<p>It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining brightly over the enemy, who were located three hundred steps away and were calmly digging their trenches. They were Austrians. I estimated the distance and fired \u2013 excellent. The Austrians started running like ants. I gave the command to fire at them occasionally and was myself following the situation through binoculars. I noticed that the enemy was crowding behind a two-story stone house with the Red Cross flag hoisted over it.<\/p>\n<p>The Austrians were running to help their own troops, the ones digging trenches near the estate on the side of Sochaczew. Some silhouettes emerged from the woods on the right, ran up to the first house, and then to the trees and to the house where the Red Cross was stationed. Since the sun was shining straight into their eyes, their aim was poor and were only hitting tree branches, without doing any harm to us. The shooting alerted the Kargopol unit \u2013 the Fifth squadron, I believe \u2013 and they came to flank me on the right. Lieutenant Count Kropotkin was in command of the skirmish line. And thus, while under fire, I ran into an old friend from school. We both went to the Nikolaev Academy and were graduates of the same class. Once the Austrians scrambled to the Red Cross building, they remained there with machine gun that had been sent from Sochaczew. I could no longer restrain myself \u2013 their treachery had to be punished. I ordered all the hussars to fire a single shot at each of the windows. The battle was heating up. There were no casualties on our side, but some Austrians were hit.<\/p>\n<p>And then Lieutenant Weber sent a machine gun for me from the division\u2019s machine gun platoon. That was the beginning of our bad luck. As soon as the machine gun started firing, the non-commissioned platoon commander was the first one to be wounded by return Austrian fire, along with the Second Squadron Platoon Commander Semykin, who was lying next to him, and also Hussar Garshin. Two hussars wanted to pull the wounded into the grove and then hand them over to the horse-holders and so on, but they were themselves wounded, one shot in his hand and the other \u2013 in his leg. Hussars Postel\u2019nikov and Podvigin volunteered to carry the machine-gunner, and were both wounded as well. Just then we received an order to rejoin the regiment, and after a three-hour fire exchange, we crawled and then ran through the grove to the spot where the horse-holders were staying.
