Sochaczew today. Early in the morning I met a young Pole who had arrived from Sochaczew only two hours ago. According to him, the Germans fled last night, and there were very few Austrians left. I passed this onto Lieutenant Ivanenko, and he in turn passed it onto regiment headquarters. When the headquarter\u00a0division learned about this, they ordered reconnaissance. They assigned our squadron with this task. As the only Subaltern, I was tasked with accompanying the First Platoon. I apprehended\u00a0a Pole, and he directed me to a crossing not far from the mill. I summoned four members of the patrol\u00a0and told them to gallop to the other shore of the river. I told the\u00a0\u201cPan\u201d that his\u00a0life depended on helping us\u00a0ford the river with our\u00a0horses. The platoon dispersed, and we set off at a gallop at 200 steps behind the patrol. I resolved that if we can cross the river, then we will be behind enemy lines.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as we began to move, shots were fired from the direction of the cemetery, located on a high bank by the river. We followed the road to the water, and as the patrol was ascending the slope towards the cemetery, the shots suddenly ceased. We cheered up. We hastily went onward. As we ascended, the horses started breathing heavier. Now what? We saw the Australian cavalry mount their horses. Hooray! Their helmets shone and their spades were lowered, but with our heavy camp packs we couldn\u2019t catch the enemy. We arrived in town by following their footprints, but they took a turn and we lost sight of them. Not knowing my way around the city, I moved forward haphazardly and ended up in a square. I stopped. I sent a message to the squadron that Sochaczew was occupied and the enemy was fleeing. I did so orally, to save time. All of a sudden, I hear horses stamping. As I prepare for an attack, I see a group of Vlasov Cossacks come out from one of the side streets. This too was a platoon under the command of Sotnik Savost\u2019ianov, a peer from my school days. \u201cSmall and daring,\u201d I thought, remembering his nickname. We greet each other, and I invite him to continue west with me.<\/p>\n<p>Now with the force of two platoons we move ahead, orienting ourselves using a compass and the directions of some Jew. We crossed the railroad \u2013 no enemy. We decided to stop to let the horses rest, and we sent out reports.<\/p>\n<p>After about two hours, the entire division arrived at the city. I joined my squadron, losing Officer Dauton to light wounds and Hussar Velikanov to serious wounds.<\/p>\n<p>The division continued westward, and then stopped. The quartering officers were sent in the opposite direction and we spent the night in Sochaczew. Why? Our sense of victory after chasing the enemy away was lost\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Our squadron ended up in the city. Ivanenko and I took the mayor\u2019s apartment, which had been completely trashed by the Germans. On the kitchen table was women\u2019s clothing, leftover food, and an overturned jar of jam. We slept in the boudoirs on sheets \u201cstill warm\u201d from the enemy. At night I dreamt about one day taking General Moritz\u2019s place and attacking whomever I want.
