The Germans have dug themselves trenches and are holding off our forces. I watched my brother\u2019s platoon attack the railway bed, but they were met with such gunfire that the platoon had to retreat. My brother\u2019s horse was wounded, and a stray bullet caught a horse in our squadron.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday Lieutenant Posazhnoi arrived to our regiment, and today he was appointed to our squadron. As we marched, he galloped up to the convoy. The hussars asked me: &#8220;Your Honor, is that a French officer?&#8221; I replied that perhaps he is an aviator\u2019s son. He is eccentric. He is dressed somewhat strangely: a cap with a large visor and a steel plate at the bottom, to protect from shrapnel; his stripes are also protected by a steel plate. All his equipment is black and his boots are curled at the toes, as if he were a caliph from Baghdad.
