su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>An attack was ordered on \u0141owicz from the direction of Sverdynia. Our horse-handlers\u00a0came under heavy artillery fire but no one was injured, as most of the bullets went over their heads. There were also explosions of shrapnel near the Regiment\u2019s headquarters, and a flock of geese suffered serious losses. Many were killed or wounded. We ate them all.<\/p>\n<p>On the order of Colonel Dreyer, the Chief of Staff of the Corps, I was sent to provide cover fire for the\u00a0machine-guns in the mounted convoy. It was necessary to go half a verst through absolutely open terrain, under the gaze of the enemy\u2019s artillerymen, in order to reach the village where the convoy was waiting. First I galloped out with five hussars, and then two minutes later ten more men followed us, and then another ten, and finally the rest of them. The maneuver was successful and the Germans weren\u2019t able to take aim. Having reached the village where the convoy was, I left the platoon behind a stone barn. Rifle bullets were buzzing loudly around us like bees, and I was at risk of losing our men and horses for nothing. I walked towards the sounds of our machine-gun and Colonel Dreyer called to me from the roof of a\u00a0house.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What is going on? Come over here.&#8221; I told him that the Chief of Staff of the Corps had called in my platoon to cover the machine-guns. I had never seen Colonel Dreyer in person. &#8220;It is I&#8221;. Seeing that the Chief was on the roof, I began to climb up in order to report on our arrival. However, my plans changed when a stray shell hit the house\u2019s gutter, and the Cheif\u00a0came\u00a0down. I reported on situation and informed him that the platoon was waiting behind a barn. &#8220;Excellent. You can wait here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I watched the shooting that was going on. Even with binoculars it was difficult to discern where the enemy was. I was surprised that the Chief of Staff of the Corps was commanding the convoy. Afterwards, I heard a lot about Colonel Dreyer and got to know him better. He was a careerist, an adventurer, and a warrior from the &#8220;army of the Huns&#8221;. In other words, he lived for war.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, I was there to see a machine-gunner get hit by an exploding bullet. By chance I had been watching him aim and suddenly a puff of smoke, literally, appeared on his nose. The machine-gunner grabbed his face and blood immediately began to flow, but luckily the bullet did not cause a serious wound.<\/p>\n<p>By four o&#8217;clock in the afternoon we received the order to prepare our sleeping accommodations, as the shooting had died down.
