Today is very cold, although it\u2019s still green everywhere. I decided to wear my sheepskin jacket with Tibetan fur. We spent another night on the <em>folwark<\/em>. In the evening, after a delicious dinner and a small glass of Hungarian spirits, we sat and had a peaceful discussion on a variety of topics. I couldn\u2019t resist expressing my sense of alarm regarding our actions. \u201cYour excellency,\u201d I addressed General Zander, \u201cWhile we sit here, somewhere no further than 10 versts away the Germans are sitting peacefully. They know it is custom for the Russian cavalry not to fight at night. Perhaps they don\u2019t even have a guard on watch. Why don\u2019t we ever disturb them at night? After all, if we frighten them at night, it will affect how they act during the day as well. Why don\u2019t we carry out night raids?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dashing\u00a0chief of headquarters supported my view. Tropin, a Kornet<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> of the 8th Don Cossack Regiment, took to my idea and began asking permission go on a night raid. The kind General Zander convinced him otherwise, saying that it\u2019s dangerous, but in the end allowed him to take 30 hunters from the regiment for a raid.
