manor\u00a0house of Roislavitsa, the location of the headquarters of the Cavalry Corps.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kornet Tropin returned early in the morning with a wound in the shoulder. He told us the following: \u201cWe went west for about 2 hours and came to the village. I decided to talk to the villagers and see if I couldn\u2019t find out something about the enemy, and so we dismounted and knocked on the first house on the outskirts of town. A Pole came out, and, seeing we were Russians, waved his arms and whispered, \u2018Quiet, quiet, the town is full of Germans\u2019. Up to 20 people were asleep in the house, which was split in two sections. Next I took 3 people with me and went in one of the rooms, where 10 Germans slept. We woke them up. Groggy from sleep, they immediately surrendered and raised their hands. After putting a guard in place I went to the other half of the house, where the scene was the same. However here, upon seeing there were only a few of us, the Germans scrambled for their weapons and began to shoot, and I was wounded in the shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>The Cossacks pulled the Kornet out of the dilapidated house with difficulty. As they were leaving the village, they ignited several pyroxylin<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> bombs and threw them in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Today, as we were driving from headquarters through the village, I heard stories from the residents about the panic that had occurred during the night. The entire battalion of Germans awoke initially from the\u00a0gunshots, and then\u00a0began randomly shooting into the air. And when the bombs exploded they apparently took them as artillery fire, and panicked and fled to the forest. They were led by the major himself, who ran out onto the front porch in his underwear. Had Tropin been more cool-headed and thought things through more fully, he could have taken many prisoners and inflicted damage upon the enemy as well. He was in fact the only victim. I was very happy that my suggestion proved to be valuable. If we scared them like that every night, they would leave Russia as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Today we\u2019re staying in\u00a0the Governor\u2019s fine house, but the luxurious \u201cpalace\u201d is occupied by General Novikov. We were very sluggish during the day. Often we would arrive to a village an hour after the Germans had left.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>A year later I ran into Sotnik Tropin. He graciously thanked me for the happiness that my idea to go on reconnaissance had brought him. First, because he was decorated with a medal and a ribbon; and second, because after he was wounded he was sent for treatment to Novocherkassk, where a dark-browed Cossack girl captured his heart with more fervor than even he himself had captured Germans in war, and the two were wed.
