Scattered shots were heard. Maybe it was\u00a0a German scout\u00a0who had gotten too close? We quickly broke camp and we didn\u2019t get any sleep.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning we wanted to take our positions, but a report arrived that the Germans were advancing. The division commander ordered us to go to the west, and he himself led another part of the division to the Warta River at a breakneck gallop. The horse-drawn artillery was having a tough time of it, as it was hard to move the equipment along the sandy road and the horses quickly tired. Before reaching the river, we met 5 infantry scouts who were walking towards us in the calmest manner. \u201cInfantry\u201d said the general, and dismounted. As it turned out, these were scouts from the 17<sup>th<\/sup> Siberian Infantry Regiment. Everyone cheered up. I didn\u2019t like this whole scene. The\u00a0general looked down on the infantry during peacetime, just as he looks down on\u00a0them now. At the sight of several riflemen he calmed down, cheered up, and let the unhappy horses as well as the entire division rest a bit. And there were only five scouts. They say that \u201ccavalry is the most\u00a0dependable sort of weapon.\u201d Under the command of this daring commander, the cavalry never leaves the battlefield without a fight.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, we crossed over the Warta River and stayed in the home of a crazy nobleman who clapped General Zander on the back and asked, \u201cDo you want some pears?\u201d The house was only barely holding together and the roof in the hall was almost one big hole, such that we could marvel at the starry sky without even going outside.
