su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>In the night, there was a fire on the German bank \u2013 they had set fire to the hay. This is most unwelcome, seeing as how we are eating only local foodstuffs and don\u2019t receive anything from the quartermaster. Usually the provisioner goes into some sort of little town and orders bread, and the foragers\u00a0order oats and hay. In the mornings, the officers drink coffee with their sandwiches, which the orderlies prepare an hour before the regiment assembles at the rally point. While the officers eat their breakfasts, the orderlies lay out the travel beds and packs. They are excellent at their job and are almost never late. I now have a travel bed, and back in 1912 I had already procured a pack on my own, when I was preparing for the war with China. During the two months I spent in the Russo-Japanese campaign as a volunteer cadet, I saw almost the exact same pack belonging to a man from the Caucasus. I ordered two bags made from canvas, which were connected to one another. The bags had a double covering for protection from the rain, and could be tied with interwoven strings. This pack was light. The bags can be connected under the horse\u2019s belly so that they don\u2019t swing around or hit the horse. My orderly, Petr Zakharich Prokhudkin, was very satisfied with the pack. The pack didn\u2019t get soaked during river crossings.<\/p>\n<p>During the day we crossed over to the western bank of the Warta River, where our infantry had already arrived. The hussars shared\u00a0their wild tobacco with the soldiers from the Seventh Infantry Regiment. We moved forward a little bit and then set up\u00a0camp for the night. It\u2019s a shame that the regiment doesn\u2019t have an assembly. All the officers in the regiment could get together, if only once in a while.
