town of Kalisz. The immortal Hussars are headed in the direction of the old apartments. To the right is the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Division, then ours, and to the left is the 1st. I was sent ahead on reconnaissance, in order to gain as much ground as possible. Near the city of Morovin I was stopped by mounted patrol officers of the 14th Cavalry Division, who warned me not to go any further. Morovin was occupied by the Germans, and the mounted patrol had just been heavily fired upon. I dismounted near a cabin, where the mounted patrol stood, and looked out from a hillock, but didn\u2019t notice anything. At the same time, the mounted patrol of the 3rd Cavalry Division of the Dubenskii Hussar Regiment approached with the mounted patrol of the Lithuanian Ulan<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>. All of the mounted patrols were under the command of the Kornets, and I, as a senior officer, proposed that we join together to defeat the enemy on foot and advance further. We gathered up to 36 rifles and began to head out from\u00a0a\u00a0sandy hillock. Then Kornet Batiushkov came racing along with a combat mounted patrol of 5 people from division headquarters. They rode up to me. When I told him we can\u2019t go any further, that we want to combine forces in order to try and defeat the assumed outpost of the enemy on foot, the daring Kornet Kostia didn\u2019t believe me and went ahead. But after only 20 seconds he flew back, showered with machine gun fire. We didn\u2019t know there were machine guns there, and thanks to the stupidity of the Germans, who revealed themselves in from of\u00a0five hussars,\u00a0we gave up on our attack and decided that everyone should continue with their own missions.<\/p>\n<p>From a local resident I learned of a trail in the forest, and decided to bypass the German outpost. The forest was dense, mostly coniferous. The trail wound like a snake, until we arrived to an elevated and well-cleared pine forest. We made a note of the place where the path went into a dense spruce forest. We went farther, but I turned this way and that way, and now do not know where I am. By this time I should have left the forest and come out\u00a0near the village of Kamen\u2019, yet I was still in the forest. Suddenly I heard\u00a0battery fire from the North-East, very close to where I was. I was relieved that I was able to orient myself and headed\u00a0towards the shots, realizing that I should still be very cautious. I had six Hussars with orderlies with me, and I had one person on watch leading about 100 steps in front. Now the shots were quite close. The lookout gives the signal to stop because he\u2019s seen \u201cthe enemy\u2019s artillery\u201d. What\u2019s going on? We went a few steps and I saw\u00a0a glade between the trees, where the battery is located and shooting to the south. It was clearly all German activity and I was very angry that I couldn\u2019t attack, as we were about 200 steps behind the battery and to the right of them. It is a pity that the\u00a0platoon was not with\u00a0me. Suddenly rifles cracked from the glade, and bullets pattered against the trees. We turned and rode back. After about three minutes I stopped and began to search for the place on the map where the battery was located. There it is: the road to Korovin-Kamen\u2019, a clearing in the woods in the south. I immediately sent a report, ordering a Hussar to go at once\u00a0to the commander of the 10th Horse Battery and to report there. (Later, I realized that our battery received the report in time and was able to take advantage of it, successfully firing on the German battery. I asked the squadron commander to give this\u00a0hussar praise.)<\/p>\n<p>Now, knowing where the battery was, I was able to navigate, and so I followed the compass to Kamen\u2019. In just a few minutes, it seemed like I was on the edge of the forest. We approached cautiously, startling some wild goats and a pair of pheasants. There was an enclosure nearby, probably where the landowner kept his game. The fence was made of barbed wire at a height of one-and-a-half feet. About 150 steps into the woods \u2013 a young spruce forest. What is there? The German mounted patrol is in the\u00a0forest. They don\u2019t see us. We cut the wire. I wanted to catch the Germans alive. But as soon as we started moving, we were fired upon. By our own people &#8212; by the Lithuanian Ulans or the Kargopoles. We waved white handkerchiefs but the shots continued, and we had to hide in the forest. The shooting stopped.\u00a0The Germans disappeared somewhere, thinking they were the ones under fire.<\/p>\n<p>I began to look north-west. About 3 versts away I saw cavalry riding back and forth on chestnut horses. A\u00a0patrol of Lubensky Hussars rode up to the edge of the forest from the north. I warned the Kornet not to run out and fall under attack. He didn\u2019t believe me and rode off. Again the rifles cracked. The Lubensky Hussars\u00a0ran into the forest, thank heaven, without casualties. A bullet hit a tree near my patrol and almost caught one of my Hussars. Seeing that the southern column was\u00a0headed in the direction of Kamen\u2019, and knowing that the German battery was\u00a0long gone from the forest (I heard the rumbling of their equipment on the highway), I went in search of my regiment. As I passed by division headquarters, I saw scout\u00a0who had been hanged. Posazhnoi, the eccentric one, rode past holding spikes to bolster his \u201cbrutal soul,\u201d as he calls it.
