class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>Today the Cavalry Corps is once again moving with the other brigades towards the city of Kalisz. It seems that we have moved far away from the main body of our forces, and there is nobody on the Corps\u2019 flanks. Our general direction is towards the east. I was sent from the 2<span style=\"font-size: small;\">nd<\/span>\u00a0Brigade to made\u00a0communication with the 1<span style=\"font-size: small;\">st<\/span>\u00a0Brigade, which is commanded by General Ilyashevich. He is a brave man, but a great lover of milk. They make fun of him behind his back.<\/p>\n<p>Since we are located near the village of Skarszew<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">y<\/span>, I knew that our Lithuanian lancers had made a bayonet attack there. Our 9<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span>\u00a0Cavalry Battery shot excellently, inflicting significant damage upon the Germans. The lancers took around 30 prisoners. The Germans had a great deal of infantry and artillery, and apparently their scouts\u00a0had been hard at work: for some reason they came at us hard without any preparatory shots, having decided to wipe the 9<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span>\u00a0Horse-drawn Artillery Brigade from the face of the earth. But the shells landed about 150 steps south of the unit and a little behind it. The field was literally plowed with shells. Everything went relatively well. The Chief of the Corps, Colonel Dreyer, arrived. We received a report, informing us that the 8<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span>\u00a0Cavalry Division is disengaging from the right flank, and that it will probably retreat. \u201cWe weren\u2019t able to take Kalisz from the east today,\u201d said Colonel Dreyer, \u201cso tomorrow we will take it from the south.\u201d But his dream didn\u2019t come to pass. A report arrived, stating that the 8<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span>\u00a0Cavalry Division had been destroyed, and that division headquarters\u00a0had been captured. Although we felt that something was wrong with the report, we began to retreat. It was already past midday.<\/p>\n<p>We are charting a course to the south-east. Darkness is settling in. It&#8217;s necessary to follow closely behind the man in front of you, as an interval\u00a0of ten paces threatens disaster. Our raven-black horses become invisible, and then the only way to see the man in front of you is to get off your horse and lie down, looking for the horseman\u2019s silhouette against the sky. The road is sandy, which is good for moving unobserved but tiring for the horses. We arrived at the village of Ko\u017aminek at around midnight.<\/p>\n<p>The 8<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span>\u00a0Cavalry Division has also arrived here, and something inconceivable was happening on the town square: a mix of cavalrymen from all three divisions, as the 14<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span>\u00a0Cavalry Division had also appeared from the home-front in Ko\u017aminek. The convoy was in particular disarray. The night was very dark, and this only added to the disorder, making it difficult for the commanders to identify their own men. We continued to move forward to the south along with the convoy, until 4 am.
