class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>We weren\u2019t able to sleep much last night. I was woken up at 5 o\u2019clock in the morning and I had to go on a scouting mission in the direction of the village of Goshonov. I wasn\u2019t able to reach the village because I was shot at from different points\u00a0by enemy guards, located on the front to the south, but I noticed that German infantry were digging trenches on the hillocks. I reported around noon about this. I found a comfortable observation point\u00a0on a little hill covered by\u00a0forest. The little hill was in the middle of the field like an island, and if I was in danger I could exit from any side.<\/p>\n<p>We grabbed oats and hay from the village and bought bread and milk. We fed the horses well and we had a good rest, staying here until 4 o&#8217;clock in the afternoon. When I joined the squadron in the evening I heard the news about the 8th Cavalry Division.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the headquarters of the division was attacked by the Germans but only a few people were captured. The division lost one piece of artillery in the swamp during a hasty retreat under enemy fire.<\/p>\n<p>Kornet Astafyev, who worked for communications at the headquarters of the 8th Cavalry Division and who survived the whole ordeal, told me the following: The headquarters of the 8th Division stood near the <em>folvark<\/em> and did not enter, dismounting at the gate. It was already around 2 pm and everyone was eating what they could find. Suddenly someone shouted: &#8220;Germans! Cavalry!&#8221; They\u00a0mounted their\u00a0horses. Captain Shatilov\u2019s horse was immediately shot out from under him. The Cossack orderly brought him his own horse. At the headquarters there were 2 military banners and a Cossack banner. Division Chief General Zander, General Kniazhevich (the commander of the 2nd Brigade), 12 officers with messengers and orderlies, and a cover platoon, were all at the headquarters. In total there were around 60 men. The Germans appeared on two sides: from the west and from the east. Nonetheless, from the west their strength was no more than half a squadron, and from the east \u2013 one-and-a-half squadron. Captain Shatilov decided to make his way\u00a0\u00a0to the east. Generals and banners\u00a0were in the center in a closed formation. This maneuver was a success, and the headquarters\u00a0passed by the Germans.
