Puddles freeze at night, but in the fields there are still flowers in bloom.<\/p>\n<p>This morning we received orders to advance on Kalisz. I felt like this was some silly joke. And sure enough, an annulment came suddenly, and instead of Kalisz we left for \u0141\u00f3d\u017a. We walked almost all day long without rest, walking until 11 o\u2019clock at night, having covered about 60-70 versts. Poor horses. Morale is low \u2013 we are retreating.<\/p>\n<p>Our Captain Becker is here in Zgierz. He was missing behind enemy lines for five weeks but he and all his people were\u00a0saved after all. It was 2 am by the time we had our sleeping arrangements settled for the evening. Domozhirov and I quartered in a tiny worker\u2019s room. We got only some bread for dinner, just a bite of it. And the horses, after getting some oats in the morning, didn\u2019t even get more oats.
