Germans\u2019 massive forces have broken through our front line. It means that intelligence we received from the locals was true, and that our scouting mission on November 1 was a success. We were added to the 2<span style=\"font-size: small;\">nd<\/span>\u00a0Army of General Scheideman, and will be positioned somewhere on a flank.<\/p>\n<p>Even though we were ready to get moving at 7 am, we only set out at 10 am. Wagon-trains, infantry, and artillery in huge numbers move through the town and have crowded the streets. They say the Germans have already occupied Lowicz. We followed the highway towards Warsaw, and it was overflowing with troops and wagons. Traffic jams regularly brought our movement to a standstill. The 5<sup>th<\/sup> Squadron, led by Lieutenant Shakh-Nazarov, retreated to a \u201cgrass pad.\u201d On top of everything, Shakh was wearing two overcoats. It is his mystery. He is an eccentric. He used to torment\u00a0my brother to such extremes that several times he was convinced he wanted him dead, all because my brother has new clothes. But my brother was fresh out of military school, after all. It finally came to a head and my brother told\u00a0him that \u201che is at his service to fight it out.\u201d I was criticized, for how could you challenge your commanding officer to a duel? I have to look after my little brother.<\/p>\n<p>It was interesting to watch infantry in battle. Here a regiment trailed off the highway; first were the scouting groups, followed by skirmish lines. Artillery were deployed, and the field hospitals set up.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed in the woods for four hours after coming under German battery fire. Then we walked for a long time, until midnight. It was pitch dark, and our column kept breaking up. People were exhausted from the lack of sleep the night before and were falling asleep on horseback. At midnight we stopped in a small village and were arguing for an hour about who would be quartered where.
