Vengzhevitse.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was called to staff headquarters this morning, where I received an order to go on a reconnaissance mission in the direction of Brzeziny. I took three hussars with me. The fog was thick; it was impossible to see anything more than a few steps in front of me, and my patrol was some twenty steps behind.<\/p>\n

I stopped at the village Pretslav, got off my horse, and we began listening. In the distance we could hear the movement of troops, the thud of wheels, and the neighing of horses. It seemed that I had already crossed over the German\u2019s defense line, and that this noise was coming from the Germans\u2019 main forces, which were headed toward the city of Petrokov.<\/p>\n

In one of the huts lay a gunman from the 18th<\/sup> Siberian Regiment, whose leg had been crushed by a canon\u00a0last night. I ordered a Pole to find a cart and take him to Ezhov. The gunman told me that the German infantrymen came early in the morning and when they saw him lying in the road, one wanted to shoot him but his commanding officer forbade it, and so he just kicked him aside. Then the German cavalrymen arrived. Two of them immediately got off their horses, looked him up and down, tied up his legs, dragged him into the hut, and gave him a bit of bread and milk. The gunman decided that cavalry are kind, but infantry are cruel.<\/p>\n

I carefully made my way to the crossing and stopped right there at a guard\u2019s house to feed my men and my horses, and to keep the road under surveillance. Thanks to the thick fog I was able to go unnoticed when the German squadron stopped only 200 feet away from where I was. We continued along the railroad to Koloshki to join the Regiment.<\/p>\n

We were not far from Koloshki when I learned that the Germans were there too. Using a compass, we went over the fields and through the forest in the dark until we arrived at the Vengzhevitse folwark<\/em>. The owner graciously invited us to spend the night. I put the hussars in the middle of an enormous cattle yard, surrounded by a stone fence. There were stables and stands for the cows, and there were only two exits. One exit was securely locked, and I set up an hourly watch schedule for the other. My plan was that I would escape through the opposite exit when the Germans came in the night.<\/p>\n

Not fifteen minutes had passed when we got a warning. An out-of-breath young man came and told us that the \u201cDeutsch\u201d were on their way. We prepared outselves. But all of a sudden – what joy! \u2013 it was our 6th Squadron, headed by Kornet Astafyev. He had come to keep lookout. That meant that the regiment was close as well. It turns out I\u2019d led us in the right direction. Now I was calm and we were under protection. We settled in to go to bed, and I spent a nice evening in the company of the overseer and Astafyev.
