su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>We slept without any disruptions, and at 10 in the morning we joined up with the regiment.<\/p>\n<p>My brother Georgy has still not returned to the squadron. Could it be that he has been captured? Back in Irkutsk,\u00a0I had a premonition\u00a0that\u00a0he would be captured on his way to the\u00a0regiment. I asked him to be careful, but he couldn\u2019t even do that for me. Once, returning around evening from a scouting mission, I passed some of our sentries and then more than half a verst out in front of them, I ran into my brother. He was on foot and alone. \u201cWhy are you walking alone out in front of our sentries?,\u201d I asked, and he replied in the most serious manner, \u201cDon\u2019t you see, I\u2019ve picked a good position for an\u00a0outpost, and I have decided to find out\u00a0what is located 1000 steps from it.\u201d \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you take any hussars with you?\u201d \u201cThey\u2019re all tired out, and anyway at school I was used to walking and running a lot, so this is nothing for me.\u201d I chided him and led him back to the outpost. In my heart I was happy that he had become a good, brave officer, but I asked him again to be careful.<\/p>\n<p>Our regiment has been informed\u00a0that we&#8217;ve been\u00a0cut off from our 2<span style=\"font-size: small;\">nd<\/span>\u00a0Army.<\/p>\n<p>As we were passing along the railroad tracks, our division discovered the 5th Battery of the 10<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th\u00a0<\/span>Artillery Brigade\u00a0in a train, which had been abandoned in a field without any covering. We\u00a0helped load the cannons, and the battery joined up with us. The officers were very pleased that an infantry battery had been transitioned to a cavalry battery, and stayed glued to the division. And when the order came down to take positions, this battery took position\u00a0and opened fired so quickly that it put the 10<span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span>\u00a0Cavalry Brigade to shame.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed the night in the village of Uyazd. The town is about 30 versts to the north-east from the city of Petrokov, not far from the Koloshki-Konsk-Kel\u2019tsy railroad.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday it snowed, and today it was cold. The ground froze and is as hard as rock. It\u2019s bad for the infantry, for\u00a0soon they won\u2019t be able to dig trenches.
