su-u-trim\">\n<p>This morning we discovered\u00a0that the\u00a038th Infantry Regiment dug trenches 700 paces from our village. It was obvious that, a day or two ago, a serious battle had taken place here. The corpses of up to 50 of our own men and up to 15 Germans lay close to the hastily dug trenches. It was obvious that the victims first suffered for a long time, and later froze from loss of blood. We deduced this from the positions of the corpses, which were twisted in an unnatural way. Some had crossed themselves before death and their hands froze that way. A sub-lieutenant was among the corpses. It seems that the Germans circumvented the trenches and placed a machine gun on the flank. This was clear from the piles of shells. There were many head injuries.<\/p>\n<p>I have been sent on a reconnaissance mission. As I leave, I wonder why nobody was gathering weapons or burying the dead. I wanted to take a rifle, to keep as a memory, but it would be too hard to carry.<\/p>\n<p>I had to go north in the direction of Brzeziny, and again I have no map. In one of the villages, a &#8220;Pan&#8221; comes up to me, gives me his honor and reports, \u201cThe Germans won\u2019t let us live. Please help.\u201d \u201cWho are you?,\u201d I asked. It seemed that this was a non-commissioned officer with the soldiers of\u00a0the infantry regiments who had disguised himself in Polish attire, afraid of being captured. \u201cThe Germans did the same thing, but there are more of them and they are causing us difficulties.\u201d I did not have free time to reconcile them and to capture Germans. I took only 2 good Cossack horses, which had been left behind in the village, and I went on.<\/p>\n<p>In the village of Borov I discovered a large enemy force. The locals told me that there were many carts and artillery that could be found in the forest. I wanted to go into the woods, but was fired at from 5 points. Then I went in the direction of the Kolushki-Brzeziny highway and spent the night at a farm near the road, which is where the 16th Tver Dragun Regiment, under the command of Kornet Khurshilov, had arrived on patrol. At around 10 pm the Nizhny Novgorod Dragun patrol, under the command of a non-commissioned officer, reported that the German medical squad had set up camp for the night not far from our\u00a0location, and that the paramedics were armed with Parabellum guns. He had snatched away 5 guns and carried them back to the Regiment. The Kornet and I also wanted to get pistols, and we decided to go on a raid together. He essentially had a full platoon and I had 6 hussars.
