su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>We hit the road early \u2013 around 4am. It was dark, and our guide, a young shepherd boy, took us on our mission to \u201ccut out the Germans,\u201d as Khurshilov used to say. We wandered around for about two hours until the boy realized that he had lost his bearings.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn was setting in as we were entering the village of V\u00edtkovice, which was completely packed with our infantry. I decided to look for my regiment, and the cornet to look for his, but I felt like talking to some old friends from the 6th Siberian Rifle Division. Division headquarters was housed in one of the nearby huts, so I stopped in. They treated me to tea and asked questions about the war. The division had just arrived from the Far East. Right away I asked for a map and told them what I knew about the enemy.  Looking out of the window, I drew their attention to the columns of gunners moving south. What are they thinking? The Germans are close, and yet they move in columns. The artillerymen told me that those at headquarters do not have the proper orientation. Just a few minutes later, shots were fired and shrapnel explosions followed near the front of the convoy. In a panic, the caravan turned and began racing in the opposite direction. The kitchen was overturned and my hussars stuffed their bags with \u201crations.\u201d But the platoons quickly formed skirmish lines and started moving forward. In an hour the battle was in full swing.<\/p>\n<p>When I came to Brzeziny, I tried to clarify the location of our division at headquarters. I was told that the Alexandrian Hussars had advanced to Plovno. I didn\u2019t find my regiment in Plovno. A junker I knew from military school told me that the day before their mounted patrol had seized several Russian sabers stamped with 5 G.P. from the German Ulans, and that according to Plovno locals, a Hussar mounted patrol had been taken prisoner, together with an officer. As I was taking a break in a square, a Polish man came up to me and said that an officer in the same uniform as mine was sleeping at his place, and that the Germans had caught and captured him and the hussars while they were asleep, because they were exhausted after wandering for three days behind enemy lines and slept like the dead. When the Germans tried to shoot the Polish man for hiding Russians, the officer asked that the man\u2019s life be spared and so he was let go.
