the Second Army Corps. In the morning I set out to look for my regiment again. I ran into a Cossack of the Fifth Don Regiment who had fled after being taken prisoner. Out of fear he had ripped off all his stripes and shoulder straps. It turned out that he had been part of the group that included the Hussers and my brother. They were very sad. I gave the Cossack the horse I had picked up earlier and he asked to stay with me until we were reunited with the division. <\/p>\n<p>At about 8 in the morning I saw a cart with four officers in it, two of whom were without uniform caps and coats. I went outside to find out what was going on. It turned out they were also escaped prisoners. I invited all of them in and treated them to tea. They were two cornets from the Eighth Dubensky Hussar Regiment. This is what they told me: by nightfall of the previous day, mounted patrols from different regiments gathered in Brzeziny and spent the night there. The situation was perfect \u2013 the division was destroying the Germans. 3000 people were taken prisoner, along with 70 guns and a bunch of wagons. Groups of prisoners kept arriving. In the middle of the night, the owner of the house where my guests were staying woke them up with the words: \u201cGet up quickly, the Germans are here.\u201d They cursed and thought that it was not the Germans but rather the Siberians bringing in more prisoners. But after looking out the window, they saw columns of Germans with guns in their hands. They rushed out the back door, into the yard, and through the garden. Having run about 10 versts, now in broad daylight, they finally found a cart and came here. <\/p>\n<p>The 21st Siberian Rifle Regiment lost 78 officers out of 90. Lieutenant Colonel Egorov, commander of the first battery of the Sixth Siberian rifle brigade, died a hero after firing the last shot from his cannon, after all the servants had been shot dead. He was a cavalier of the order of St. George, which he had earned in the Russo-Japanese War.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that General Zelinsky, Colonel Kosov, Captain Tsirk, and others were among those taken prisoner. All of them were people I knew from the Far East. Some of the prisoners were liberated in battle. The Leib-guard Cossacks saved about 250 people. They set up an ambush in a clearing in the woods, through which the convoy carrying the prisoners would pass, and attacked the convoy from both sides, breaking it up almost entirely. <\/p>\n<p>While I was listening to these stories, I looked out of the window, saw galloping horsemen, and recognized our Hussars under the command of non-commissioned officer Vereshchagin, a brave heart and a fierce fighter. I came out into the square. Vereshchagin dashed towards me and reported that two squadrons of Germans had been following him and that they were very close. At first I didn\u2019t believe him. It simply couldn\u2019t be true, as I\u2019d spent the night over there yesterday with the Cossacks regiment. But then I assessed the situation and realized that we needed to rush or the headquarters of the 2nd Army Corps would be captured by the Germans. We mounted our horses. Vereshchagin had nine Hussars, and I had six. A Cossack was immediately sent to the headquarters to provide communication. An infantry non-commissioned officer was passing by, so I ordered him to get as many soldiers together as possible (there are always some wandering around in the street) and deploy them on top of the hill before the crossing.<\/p>\n<p>Before reaching the hill, I stopped the men and quietly rode ahead by myself, so that I could see what was going on behind the hill without showing myself. There I saw Germans at the crossing \u2013 about 50 cavalrymen, some off their horses, some still on horseback, one sitting on top of the barrier gate smoking. It was one verst from the crossing to Plovno. We needed to drive them away as soon as possible. To the east of the crossing there was a dip in the road, and to the west of the crossing \u2013 a sand hill. It would be hard to cross here in equestrian formation. I slowed my horse, ordered the Hussars to spread out as much as possible, and with a loud \u201churrah!\u201d we dashed out onto the hill. The Germans were taken by surprise, mounted their horses, and left towards the north in chaos. I followed them. At first the Germans went along the road, then they turned and started to disappear into the birch tree grove. They were only about two hundred steps away, but I couldn\u2019t catch them. Even though the birch trees were thinly scattered, the branches hit my face hard a couple of times and almost poked my eyes out. Then I noticed that the Germans were looking back and slowing down. They had realized that there were just a few of us. Once we had gone through the grove, I saw that Vereshchagin was right. There were two squadrons in expanded formation in the clearing, quite close to us. I ordered to stop, take the guns, stand behind the trees, and shoot with the guns resting on the knots of the trees. I planned to fire a salvo of shots upon them, but it didn\u2019t work: half of our 16 guns were rusted out. Meanwhile, a platoon of about 40 men dispatched from the German front and galloped along the river. I thought they wanted to cut me off from the crossing and I started to retreat. The Germans realized that they wouldn\u2019t be able to cross the viaduct before me and set out on my tail. Their horses were fresh, but I continued ahead. As I approached the crossing, I wondered how my infantry was doing. Had they managed to put together a group of men or not? We got through the crossing and I took a sharp right. Now the Germans had reached the crossing, but a salvo of shots were fired at them from the hill. It was the infantry non-commissioned officer who had gathered about 30 men, positioned them in trenches and, after letting me through, attacked the unwanted guests. I passed the hill and immediately sent a Hussar to the corps headquarters with a verbal message while I ordered the others to dismount, and we then started to shoot at the retreating Germans. They scattered across the field, but didn\u2019t dare approach the railroad. As they were moving forward the Hussars picked up several lances dropped by the Germans. Perhaps they will come in handy.<\/p>\n<p>A little later, fifty Kuban Cossacks arrived under the command of an old army Sergeant Major. He was so old that at first he couldn\u2019t even locate the Germans with his binoculars, and when the Sergeant pointed them out to him he said, \u201cYes, there are a lot of them. But what can I do with fifty men?\u201d I apologized, said that I was there by accident, and that I had to leave for the regiment. <\/p>\n<p>I gathered the Hussars and we went to headquarters, planning to find out the location of my regiment there. There was chaos in the headquarters. When I found Colonel Lebedev and told him that I was looking for the regiment, at first he ignored me. However, when I offered him the lances we had taken as trophies, and when he found out that I had just driven the Germans away, he started thanking me and calling me a savior. Lebedev addressed the door of one of the rooms where Lieutenant General Churin, Commander of the 2nd Army Corps was sitting: \u201cYour Excellency, do we go to the troops, or do the troops come to us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was decided that headquarters would move closer to the front line.
