A billeting officer passed on a \u201chello\u201d to me from a \u201cCossack officer,\u201d but I didn\u2019t go to find out who it was. In the morning I found out it was the Duke of Leuchtenberg. I knew him when he was just a junker. He is my brother\u2019s friend from military school, a very nice and modest young man.<\/p>\n<p>We settled in on a guarding mission. My outpost was in a house on the edge of the village that stretched for several versts. Only a sick old man was living there and we gave him food. At night his wife arrived and discovered that one of two turkeys had disappeared from under the old man\u2019s bed. She started blaming the hussars, but the old man said, \u201cShame on you. What if our Yas\u2019 got hungry and took a turkey from somewhere? There\u2019s a war going on, after all.\u201d He turned out to be an old soldier.
