Before the order came for me to take leave of the outpost, a dramatic scene played out: a travelling kitchen suddenly appeared at the second hut. I told the infantry lieutenant that it was stupid for them to come up so close, but he reported that the people were hungry and tired. All of a sudden the Germans opened fired, skillfully firing at the edge of the village. At this moment I received the order to join the regiment. I walked along the street, literally running short treks from house to house with shrapnel falling all around me.
