Some Poles attacked Hussar Rogal\u2019sky and beat him up with oak branches, seemingly because he had taken firewood for the kitchen. I saw this happening and rushed to help him with a riding crop. The Polish man had his back to me and didn\u2019t see me raise the crop at him. He hit my arm and drew blood, after which he was whipped as a punishment on Pasazhnoy\u2019s orders. <\/p>\n<p>Dusk was falling when we were put on alert and taken to another village, two versts away. The 14th Cavalry Division took our spot. The treasurer came and paid us our salary. I received three months worth. Finally our packs arrived. I didn\u2019t suffer too much, since I had extra undergarments and miscellaneous items in my saddlebags, but some officers didn\u2019t have anything, not even a towel, for fear of placing unwanted burden on their horses.
