The villagers are very nice, putting samovars out along the road and treating passing soldiers to tea. <\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a rumour that we retreated from Lodz on November 22. We held back the German attacks on the Lovno- \u0141owicz \u2013 Stryk\u00f3w front line and the enemy suffered terrible losses. In the evening, captain Domozhirov arrived. <\/p>\n<p>As I was rewriting my diary I recalled an incident, but I do not exactly remember when it happened \u2013 in October or November. There was this one time when the scouts reported that a brigade of German Ulans was preparing to attack us.  Our regiment was in full force. The commander gave the signal to attack the cavalry. I can still see the happy faces of the hussars. They all had such broad smiles on their faces, that I couldn&#8217;t help but laugh. Captain Baron Tornau was riding in between the squadrons. Despite the fact that he was 80, everybody called him Zhenya. Zhenya was inspired and was inspiring the hussars, who were already eager to go into battle. But, sadly, the Germans avoided the attack and left. It was so upsetting. I was so sure that we would destroy the Ulan brigade.
