su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>That night we received news that a battalion from the 313th\u00a0Balashov Infantry Regiment arrived on our flank, and by the morning had crossed over to the other side of the Bzura.\u00a0 I got up early, at 4:45 in the morning, \u00a0and everything was quiet. I called the duty station and informed them of the impending crossing. At 5 in the morning, intermittent shots started, and continued for half an hour. Around 6 am, with some difficulty, I determined the infantry had crossed to the other bank. Last night the sappers had silently constructed a bridge, working in the icy water. The Balashovites crossed without casualties and seized two sleeping German sentries. The sentries were so confident that the Russians would not advance that they even slept naked. Having crossed without casualties, the Balashovites remained at the line of the guard trenches and did not push forward ahead energetically. Part of the trench was under a steep bank, where it was easier to take cover from German fire.<\/p>\n<p>Our hussars led them to the guard trenches. They had to go the rest of the way themselves, but their two batallion officers were unable to. Our hussars spent the day carrying ammunition to the infantry and helping with the wounded. One of our hussars, Chushev, took a fatal gunshot wound to the head. I had terrible pity for this intelligent, cheerful, and lively hussar. It is likely he will not live. Just as they carried Chushev out, a volunteer sergeant was injured in both arms as he was looking through his binoculars.<\/p>\n<p>Before 4 am, a hurricane of fire began from two heavy and two field batteries. The fog that had descended prevented me from witnessing the beautiful sight. On the phone I overheard something interesting: the battalion commander says they found a German in the chimney of a burnt-out house. He was an excellent shooter, having wounded 12 \u00a0Balashovites, and the commander asked for permission to take action against him. Two minutes later, a heavy shell was fired. It took off, but was too far away. A second fell on target, and both the chimney and the German became but a memory. It\u2019s good that it&#8217;s warm today: 2 degrees by R\u00e9aumer. It&#8217;s good for the wounded.
