At 2 in the morning I was woken up by the squadron on duty officer, who reported that the Germans are counterattacking. I order everybody from the bunker to the line of fire. It was a frosty night. The Germans shot rockets in the air. Sometimes the rays of the searchlight cut through the darkness. The attack was thwarted, and at five in the morning I went to sleep. The operator reported that he overheard how a bridge suitable for artillery has been\u00a0built across the Bzura. Sometimes it can be amusing to eavesdrop over the telephone lines. A beep, a ring, all lines connected–sometimes the division headquarters is on the line, sometimes it’s the regiment or the battery, and sometimes everyone at once.<\/p>\n

They informed the infantry over the phone that at 5 in the morning we will advance. I requested to be woken up at the sound of the first shot. I slept until 6 o’clock and then went into the trenches. Everything was quiet. The trenches were empty and occupied by only one squad, since everybody else was relaxing in the bunkers. Yesterday the thaw drove away all the snow, but it was cold.<\/p>\n

I went back to sleep at 8 am, but not for long, since I was woken up at 9 am. I learned from phone conversations that the Khmelevsky battery was ordered to demolish two houses, located 300 paces ahead of our infantry. The order was executed stunningly. The bombardment of the village continued. Later I learned that the Khmelevsky battery remained so hidden from the enemy’s eyes, that even the military intelligence of the German planes couldn’t locate it. The battery inflicted massive damage to our enemies while remaining invincible. Its commander, Captain Zhdanov, was awarded the Order of Saint George.<\/p>\n

At 12 o’clock noon, we overheard an order to remove the 3rd Husar Squadron and three Dragoon squadrons from the front. Consequently, Captain Domozhirov remained commander of the area and left for the second line, leaving me in command of the squadron. I had to command and occupy a part of the adjacent unit’s area. Some German has been setting fire to our trenches since morning, nearly injuring several people.<\/p>\n

Around 6 o’clock in the evening we overheard a complaint by the infantry, saying that one of the batteries was firing upon their own. A minute later, the commander of the 3rd Squadron appeared and asked to transmit over the telephone that seven shells from the front had exploded in his area. Who is doing this? I have some news from the trench: a cat– she is white and quite dirty, but cute and unbelievably playful. One might say that I risked my life to save her, since I snatched her off the parapet in the middle of machine-gun fire and brought her to the bunker. After feeding her, she cheered up.<\/p>\n

It is nearly midnight as I am writing this. What’s more, since 8 o’clock in the evening there has been discussion of an attack. For a full hour, the artillery thundered the Germans, after which we advanced in leaps and bounds. Every minute since 11 o’clock we have awaited strikes from their bayonets. They say that barbed wire is holding up our men, and that they have to cut and hack their way through it. The passageway is narrow. The infantry regiment commander is hastening the attack over the phone. He was told that a yell of “Hoorah!” will come soon. Once, he received a different answer: “Let the people eat.” I can’t sleep and I am looking forward to the end of the fighting. Indeed, you rarely find yourself in such a situation where you know, hear, and see so much.<\/p>\n
