class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>I did not sleep until 2 in the morning, waiting the whole time for an attack. The order was: \u201csend a sapper.<strong><em>\u201d <\/em><\/strong>Yet, there was no attack. This may be due to the absence of officers, and that there is no one to push out ahead. I woke up at 7 in the morning. The news, as it turns out, is that during the night the Balashovites were sent help from two squadrons of the Georgian grenadier regiment. As the Georgians approached the front, they shelled their own troops.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday evening the young Cornet Rogenbakh arrived, after being appointed to the second squadron. He was indignant when he received word by phone that the attack was postponed. From the wounded soldiers we learned that our lines of soldiers lie in wait 50 meters from the German trenches and do not dare to advance. Ten Georgians were taken prisoner. They say there are only about 200 Germans left and that our men make up five batallions, and that our men can\u2019t take the Germans, who are broken down by our artillery. Cornet Rogenbakh has asked me for permission to join the infantry, shout \u201cHoorah!,\u201d and thereby receive the Cross of St. George. Of course I didn\u2019t dare give him permission, although I wanted to play the same joke myself. The enemy is nearby, and so I made the clever decision to send Rogenbakh to conduct reconnaissance. He happily went. I myself want to go to Bzura, but unfortunately I remain in command of the squadron. I want to wash away the disgrace of the Georgians and the indecisiveness of the infantry. If things continue this way everywhere, we will be defeated. It\u2019s terrible, and I want to believe that it\u2019s all due to the absence of officers. \u00a0When Cornet Rogenbakh returned from reconnaissance, he reported that the infantry is without officers. The battalion commander sits behind his troops all the time and is unsure of his men. He does hardly anything, and the soldiers complain about the lack of officers and the pointless casualties they are suffering.<\/p>\n<p>At about 5 in the afternoon, for the first time in several days, the Germans began shooting from their heavy guns, which they hadn\u2019t used before. By 8 in the evening, the whole village was on fire. About 30 houses were burning at once. I was morally and physically exhausted. My lower back aches from nonstop running along the comparatively shallow trenches.
