The horse battery platoon arrived at night and began digging trenches around our right flank. They were sent in case of an attack and counterattack. I assigned the 4th platoon to cover us. I slept until 6 in the morning. As it turns out, two more battalions of Georgian grenadiers arrived in the evening. They immediately charged with their bayonets. The Germans stayed put and took the attack in their trenches. Many Germans were stabbed and 200 people were taken prisoner. It seems that I was wrong to chastise our infantry: even if they lack officers, they acted decisively.<\/p>\n

Today were heard about the attack from a lightly-wounded Georgian who passed through out trenches. He arm was pierced and when he noticed that the bullet had only passed through the flesh, he continued shooting and charged with his bayonet. After running his bayonet through a German, he shot those running away with a German shoulder rifle and thus conserved his own ammunition. He carried a German bayonet: on one side there is a knife and on the other side \u2013 a saw. It’s convenient for housework and unpleasant for one’s enemy.<\/p>\n

By 9 o’clock the Germans had retreated and only occasionally took shots from their artillery. One shell exploded in our trenches and the canister hit my overcoat. At 10 o’clock we had already reported that the Germans had been driven from the village, located about 4 versts from the shore of the Bzura, and that an additional 300 people had been taken prisoner there. At the same time, the Germans again began shooting from their artillery toward our position. We had to evacuate all the residents of the Sliadov and Kromnov villages, as in the past we’d had people cut our telephone lines. I felt bad for the women and children but we had to evacuate them as well.<\/p>\n

Around 11 am we could hear the endless hissing of shells from the north of our position, although now they were no longer ours, but German shells. The shells flew low and occasionally the wind would carry them above our heads. Some of the shells did not detonate. We learned via telephone that the Germans are attacking the village Kamion in large columns. This was their counterattack, but everything worked out in our favor.<\/p>\n
