Border patrol officers were there as well. We argued a great deal about the war. We arrived at the conclusion that we don&#8217;t have enough initiative, seldom practice flanking maneuvers, and that we don&#8217;t know how to retreat. That during peacetime it would have been better to have had fewer regiments, and that routine duties seriously distract soldiers from their training. It was even said that only luck can save us from defeat, and that it is a challenge for us to go up against German discipline.
