Along the way I was busy with the platoon, familiarizing myself with the men and giving them time to get used to me. We did not have much time for sleep. While still on the road, we heard that the German cavalry was approaching the city.<\/p>\n<p>Early in the morning we marched west, and after about 7 versts we encountered a German cavalry: a brigade of Bavarian cuirassiers. We were only a single brigade as well, under the command of baron Korf. A battle unfolded, and it could have been a brilliant victory for us, had we possessed \u201ceyesight, speed, and force,\u201d as Suvorov said. We waited a long time for clearance from headquarters to attack the Germans, and they slipped away from us.
