attacked the city of Shadov and it was a day I will never forget. Our squadron was appointed to do reconnaissance. We got up early, the weather was divine, my soul was soaring, the larks were singing, and I was in a good mood. The locals were saying that Shadov is occupied by the Germans, but this information was not consistent. On the way to Shadov, I learned that there were 30 Germans staying overnight in the nearest village, and I decided to capture them. We surrounded the village from 2 sides, but the Germans left half an hour before our arrival. So we continued on. My patrol reached the Shadov station, but it is empty, not a soul there. I hide the main body of our patrol in the woods and I send the rest towards the mill. We have been waiting for an hour, everything is quiet. Suddenly there were shots near the mill. The patrol reports that 5 riders emerged from the woods and, upon noticing the patrol, they shot several rounds at them. The patrol responded, shot back, and the riders galloped away. We waited for some time. Later, I decided to scout Shadov myself without waiting for reinforcements. The patrol was moving ahead through the town and everything was quiet. Suddenly, someone from the patrol fired a shot. He shot at one of the locals, who saw the patrol and started to run. I didn\u2019t know what happened and gave the command to \u201cTo battle!\u201d With delight mixed with feelings of horror, I galloped into the town. There were 19 people in our squadron. About 700 steps ahead of us, people were swarming around and lining up across the street. Bullets started buzzing. Someone shouted, \u201cHurrah!\u201d Across from us, I clearly see Germans, forming two lines across the whole width of the street. The front line is shooting from their knees and the back line from a standing position. There are only 200 steps remaining between the Germans and us, but they continue to stand. I am afraid to glance back and look at the hussars, but I hear the horses tramping, which calms me down. Now I start to become afraid, because I can clearly see my enemies\u2019 faces: some with mustaches, some with beards; and their lines remain standing. At last one of the shooters rose up from his knees and all of the Germans started to run in a panic. I cried \u201cHurrah!,\u201d shrilling with a wild voice and raised my Shashka up high. This is when the fun begins. But after a few seconds I started feeling anxious. I see the Germans are running and start to disappear, some to the right, and others to the left. One of the them shot at me from the front garden of a house, as I was galloping past it. It is hard to swing my Shashka so instead I grab my Browning. I see one of the Germans fall after my shot almost under the legs of my horse. I fly into the square and then I stop. I don\u2019t see anyone, but the shots continue. There is a truck near the Catholic church with three Germans in it. Two of my hussars rushed ahead. Meanwhile I hear the shots from two rifles. I turn around and see two Germans in a passageway in between houses shooting at me. While they were reloading their weapons, I had time to shoot them and both fell. I glanced back and saw only 4 of my hussars on the square. Since I had to reload my weapon, I galloped into a passageway, where three more of my hussars joined me. I decided that now it was time to go home. On the way back we did not rush, in order not to totally exhaust our tired horses. And on the way we did not come across any other patrol &#8211; neither ours nor the enemy&#8217;s. At 2 am we were back with the squadron. Everyone was asleep. The cavalry captain, Barnov, woke up and thought that I was a ghost, because the hussars under the command of Ligin had arrived earlier and said that we were probably killed during the attack in Shadov.<\/p>\n<p>Today the hussars did nothing but talk about the attack. They were in a happy mood, and regretted that we did not have enough people to surround the town and capture everything: all the Germans and 11 trucks. Only hussar Yurkin was missing and also hussar Tupitsyn was lightly wounded. I promised the squadron to petition for decorations, and people were happy. The poor horses suffered: 7 were killed and 2 wounded.
