su-u-trim\">\n<p>Our overnight stay in the village of Poveljany turned out to be ill-fated. I was awakened at 4:30 by my orderly. I looked at my watch and told him that it was too early. \u201cNo, sir, the Germans are in the village.\u201d It was only then that I noticed the sound of gunfire. My bed was by the window. Through the window, I saw the Cossacks racing by, nearly everyone without saddles, and two without trousers. Our officers were already half-dressed. Somebody had put on my uniform in a hurry, and the ones left were too small for me. Looking outside, I saw that our hussars were racing by. I saw machine gunner rushing by and a two-wheeled cart overturned. I drew my Shashka and wanted to slash every camp cot, not to leave any trophies for the Germans, but my orderly implored me not to, saying that they would attempt to pack them up and take them with us.<\/p>\n<p>I ran to my platoon. To my good luck, the platoon was already located in a large courtyard. The horses were going berserk and wouldn\u2019t permit themselves to be saddled. The Germans were now firing from two artillery pieces, which were rather close by. People had gotten dressed in any way they could. The orderly brought my horse, and I mounted it and ordered: \u201cFollow me, on the right in groups of three.\u201d My insistence on knowing how to line up troops in a column from an extended front came in handy. I intentionally started at a walk; I wanted to calm my men down; everybody was still half-asleep, plus we got rather tired yesterday. Several bullets whistled above our heads, and two of those caused me to break into a trot.<\/p>\n<p>At the exit of the village I met up with our infantry. I became embarrassed and slowed to a walk. The commanding officer of their troops came up to me and asked: \u201cWhat is going on?\u201d I replied that I did not know anything. Evidently, the Germans had passed through our infantry sentries at night, using the swamp. I wished our infantry success and headed toward the trumpet call coming down from the hill, summoning the hussars.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that we slept without protection: there were no posts, and our convoy was located closer to the enemy than were our combat troops. Luckily Hussar Koshev, the orderly of our brigade commanding officer, was with our convoy. The Tatar Koshev spent the night with the Cossacks and got up early in the morning to look after the horses, when he saw, to his surprise, that there were Germans in the next courtyard over. Koshev grabbed the first rifle he could lay his hands on and began firing. The alarm had been sounded. The Germans had already snuck up to two huts quietly and slaughtered nine sleeping Cossacks with sabres. Having heard the alarm sounded by Koshev, the Cossacks started jumping out from their huts, running like crazy, and sending our regiment into a flurry. The Germans no longer maintained their silence and opened fire, and we cleared the village. The Germans had a battalion with two cannons. They knew that there were cavalrymen in this village, and our battalion\u2019s attack had shocked them. They wanted to capture our cannons, but their horses were shot down by our infantrymen. The Germans started dragging the cannon by hand, but suddenly they were facing the cavalry attack. These were the Cossacks who were taking care of the convoy and the Hussar&#8217;s orderlies. 70 prisoners and the cannons were captured. General Chaikovsky was terribly angry about the impudence on the part of the Germans. The Germans succeeded in pillaging our convoy.<\/p>\n<p>In the evening, I went along with three hussars who were called to the commanding officer of the regiment: Baron Korf ordered me to head to the settlement of Prudz, in order to bring back our Brigadier General Larionov. I had to travel seventy versts and did not return until 1 o\u2019clock in the morning. While I was away, our forces went on the attack to pursue the infantry through the swamp. On the way, they killed German patrols with sabres. Just before reaching the German trenches, the attackers became stuck in the swamp and dismounted their horses. They turned around, even led their horses by the reins, and this is when they suffered the most losses. Up to fifty people were either killed or wounded. The Uhlans\u2019 right flank found solid ground, reached the trenches, and killed the machine gunners, but could not take the machine guns with them.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, our infantry in the direction of Leparda captured 1,500 people and took a four-gun battery. I saw a very interesting postcard at General Larionov&#8217;s place:\u00a0 a bullet hole hit the heart of the Kaiser. This postcard was found on the chest of a dead German.<\/p>\n<p>Today we moved even further south. Over these days, everyone and the horses have gotten badly worn out. Yesterday, as we approached our night camp, I fell asleep in my saddle. The intense dust hurts my eyes and lips.
