class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p><b>The Village of Kliarishki<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In the morning we awoke to artillery fire. We now have an order to wake up at 4 am and be ready to march by 5 am. The Germans, evidently, are advancing and want to press us against the swamp, where there is only one place to cross it. Here one can ford the swamp one by one, and incidentally the water reaches the saddletree, or one can cross over logs. When our units got to the crossing, the Germans starting shelling the area again with artillery. Ahead, closer to the enemy, was a forest. We were greatly helped by the rain, because it kept the dust down. The artillery fire wounded two of our hussars and killed another as they were rolling in the field phone wires.<\/p>\n<p>We had to let every part of the division get across. The crossing was terrible, worse than moving in line. First a piece would get stuck, and then an ammunition wagon. Fortunately, the German artillery was not hitting the crossing, otherwise they would have turned us into porridge. What was most frustrating of all was that it turned out that the Germans only had two companies with two guns. Also, the woods and swamp were less than ideal for the cavalrymen.
