su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>As usual, I spent the night in the trenches, walking from one group of hussars to another. Around 3 am, the skirmish subsided, the clouds parted, and the day promised to be hot. Everyone dreamed of drying out. I went to the dugout, drank tea, and at 4 am I went to sleep, as it was the second night that I did not close my eyes. I could not take off my boots, and my legs were completely wet. At 5 am, Captain Domozhirov wakes me up and says that I should go to the trenches right away, since they called and said that the Germans are advancing. I went to the trenches quickly. At this time, the continuous firing of light and heavy artillery began, but all to the left or to the right of our area. I made all the orders for countering the attack and waited for the enemy to appear. At the beginning of the 7th hour, I receive an order to move back. I had to gather everyone, and across a wide area. I took the direction of crossing the <span class=\"st\">Dubysa<\/span> River, where we were to wait for the horse handlers. I walked by way of gullies, myself hauling 300 cartridges in order to not leave them for the Germans. When we left the trenches, the Germans had already occupied the trenches to the left of me, which our men had already left. To the right and left was hellish artillery fire, but it did not touch me since I led my people in secret.<\/p>\n<p>When we had walked a couple of versts, I decided that we needed to pause for a moment and I took a very comfortable position in the rear. I had just divided the people, when a chain of Germans appeared on a nearby hill. They walked as if in a parade. I fired a round and began to hit them with a constant aim; they were 500-600 steps away. Because of the mountains, a new dense chain of Germans appeared. I shot at them, and then directed my people to run. We rolled down into a gully like balls, and the German machine-gunner did not have time to aim. We ran for about 5 minutes and were already out of breath, as we were carrying every little thing from the trenches. We slowed down to a march and suddenly saw the horse handlers. The talented senior non-commissioned officer Soldatov lead them very well. He was waiting for us. I crossed over the <span class=\"st\">Dubysa<\/span> and occupied the trenches on the eastern high bank. The other shore was in full view. Dense and sparse chains of Germans moved as if in a painting. We only had 2 guns, and the target was 10 batteries. We were a handful of people, and they were 12-15 times our size. I opened fire again and sent the 1st half-squadron to do reconnaissance.
