In most polls I\u2019ve seen this year they\u2019re the clear front runners and both will deservedly face off next year in the Grammys.&nbsp; So no Kung Fu Kenny but what did make the most prestigious best of list of the year?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/X.jpg\">&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/X.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3432\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/X.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/X.jpg 109w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/X-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>X: <em>Stranger in the Alps<\/em> by Phoebe Bridgers<\/p>\n<p>The title may be a <em>Big Lebowski <\/em>reference but unfortunately, this isn\u2019t a stoner rock album about bowling.&nbsp; Ms. Bridgers rights great music for staring out of car windows on a rainy day which is basically my favorite time to listen to music.&nbsp; Check out \u201cMotion Sickness\u201d which throws heavy shade at her ex Ryan Adams (catch him later on this list).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/IX.jpg\">&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/IX.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3427\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/IX.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/IX.jpg 104w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/IX-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>IX: <em>Colors <\/em>by Beck<\/p>\n<p>Beck original planned to release this around the same time as his 2014 Grammy winning folk snoozefest <em>Morning Phase<\/em> but the hype around the latter album convinced him to hunker down and work harder on the follow up.&nbsp; Over the next three years, Beck dropped numerous singles, blew threw three release dates, and opened for U2 on their Joshua Tree tour before finally delivering an album.&nbsp; <em>Colors <\/em>is his most optimistic and Pop-iest album yet.&nbsp; In 2014, aka the year of \u201cHappy\u201d, this would\u2019ve fit right in but in 2017 the album is jarringly escapist.&nbsp; \u201cWow\u201d was originally supposed to feature Chance the Rapper but it still bumps heavily.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/flowerboy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-3425\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/flowerboy-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/flowerboy-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/flowerboy-298x300.jpg 298w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/flowerboy-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/flowerboy.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>VIII: <em>Flower Boy <\/em>by Tyler the Creator<\/p>\n<p>AKA Blonde part 2.&nbsp; If you liked Frank Ocean\u2019s loosie singles this year like \u201cChanel\u201d than you\u2019ll love <em>Flower Boy <\/em>and not just the song Frank is on. It doubles as a coming out statement from one of rap\u2019s most terrifying and often problematic voices.&nbsp; Besides the previously mentioned Ocean featuring \u201c911\/Lonely Boy\u201d, \u201cBoredom\u201d is a great song to start with.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/whitereaper.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-3431\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/whitereaper-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/whitereaper-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/whitereaper-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/whitereaper-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/whitereaper-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/whitereaper-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/whitereaper.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>VII: <em>The World\u2019s Best American Band <\/em>by White Reaper<\/p>\n<p>That title is honestly not far off. If you like garage rock or power pop or whatever suburb kids make in their basements with distortion pedals then you\u2019ll love White Reaper.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/taylorswift.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-3430\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/taylorswift-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/taylorswift-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/taylorswift-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/taylorswift.png 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>VI: <em>reputation <\/em>by Taylor Swift<\/p>\n<p>Is this a great album? No. Is it her worst album? Ehhhh maybe. It\u2019s extremely entertaining and only like three of the songs are complete train-wrecks.&nbsp; The more traditional second half of the album work is the best. \u201cGetaway Car\u201d sounds like a <em>1989 <\/em>b-side which is a compliment coming from me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/HarryStyles-albumcover.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-3426\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/HarryStyles-albumcover-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/HarryStyles-albumcover-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/HarryStyles-albumcover-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/HarryStyles-albumcover-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/HarryStyles-albumcover.png 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>V.<em> Harry Styles <\/em>by Harry Styles<\/p>\n<p>Who knew that Harry Styles would be this year&#8217;s\u2019 most convincing 70s style rockstar?&nbsp; Probably anyone paying attention to One Direction\u2019s late career Fleetwood Mac fetish but back then I was too busy listening to Sun Kil Moon to bother.&nbsp; Lo and behold, I barely made it through one of the new Sun Kil Moon albums this year but Harry\u2019s solo debut has been a steady presence in my Spotify recently played.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/crow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-3424\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/crow-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/crow-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/crow-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/crow-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/crow-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/crow-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/crow.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>IV.<em> A Crow Looked At Me<\/em> by Mount Eerie<\/p>\n<p>This album is the sound of Phil Elverum grieving. It was recorded following his wife\u2019s death from cancer, in the room she died in, on her instruments, <em>Crow<\/em> is among the most realistically sad albums you\u2019re likely to hear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/purecomedy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-3428\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/purecomedy-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/purecomedy-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/purecomedy-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/purecomedy-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/purecomedy.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>III. <em>Pure Comedy <\/em>by Father John Misty<\/p>\n<p>His press antics always threaten to overshadow his music but his lyrics are still at least as interesting as his interviews, so I\u2019ll keep listening.&nbsp; The last one\u2019s theme was marriage and sounded like upbeat NPR folk rock.&nbsp; This one covers everything from religion to politics to something far scarier: Josh Tillman\u2019s own thoughts.&nbsp; Sure, it\u2019s a 74 minute slog but the 70s soft rock production makes it a very pretty slog and the lyrics make it an extremely funny slog.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/Ryanadamsprisoner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-3429\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/Ryanadamsprisoner-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/Ryanadamsprisoner-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/Ryanadamsprisoner-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/Ryanadamsprisoner-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/Ryanadamsprisoner.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>II.<em> Prisoner<\/em> by Ryan Adams<\/p>\n<p>His solo debut was entitled \u201cHeartbreaker\u201d, but after a divorce with actress Mandy Moore, Adams is now the one who\u2019s heartbroken.&nbsp; Following his full album cover of Taylor Swift\u2019s <em>1989,<\/em> <em>Prisoner<\/em> is Adams&#8217;s first album openly about his divorce with Moore and it sure shows.&nbsp; Heartbreak has always been RyRy\u2019s strong suit and <em>Prisoner <\/em>does not disappoint. By my ears, it\u2019s his best album in over a decade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/randy-newman-dark-matter-450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-3433\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/randy-newman-dark-matter-450-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/randy-newman-dark-matter-450-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/randy-newman-dark-matter-450-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/randy-newman-dark-matter-450-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2017\/12\/randy-newman-dark-matter-450.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&nbsp;<\/a>I.<em> Dark Matter <\/em>by Randy Newman<\/p>\n<p>Arriving nine years after Newman\u2019s last album of newly written songs, <em>Dark Matter <\/em>is an absolute masterclass in songwriting. \u201cThe Great Debate\u201d, \u201cPutin\u201d, and \u201cIt\u2019s a Jungle Out There\u201d are razor sharp satire.&nbsp; \u201cLost Without You\u201d and \u201cWandering Boy\u201d are tear inducing. \u201cBrothers\u201d is an imagined conversation between Jack and Bobby Kennedy debating the merits of the Bay of Pigs.&nbsp; The music sticks to Newman\u2019s classic piano man leading a big band template, but rocks as hard as any punk record I\u2019ve heard this year at times.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Written By Jonah Skeen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First things first: I didn\u2019t spend enough time with the Kendrick album or the Lorde album this year to justify their inclusion.
