{"id":874,"date":"2011-06-08T14:15:44","date_gmt":"2011-06-08T19:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/?p=874"},"modified":"2011-07-15T08:13:35","modified_gmt":"2011-07-15T13:13:35","slug":"man-man-show-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/2011\/06\/man-man-show-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Man Man show review by Tessa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Wednesday I made the pilgrimage to New York City to see a show.\u00a0 Fellow DJ, Kazakhstan Dan of Shuffle the Playlist and I decided to meet up and see Man Man with opening act Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.\u00a0 I had listened to Man Man in the past and enjoyed their newest album <em>Life Fantastic<\/em> so for $20 it made sense to check them out.\u00a0 We were not disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>This may have been one of the best performances I&#8217;ve ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>We were tipped off that this show might be fantastic while we waited in line, three women were going around asking if people wanted their faces painted and handed out kazoos.\u00a0 So with war paint on and kazoos in hand we entered the venue.<\/p>\n<p>Man Man&#8217;s sound is something that to describe seems like a nightmare:\u00a0 Think punk, indie rock, xylophone, and the circus.\u00a0 It&#8217;s weird as hell.<\/p>\n<p>Shilpa Ray opened and it was a huge surprise, Dan and I had both listened to her album and weren&#8217;t enamored but her live performances are something n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-877\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_8-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_8-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_8-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_8-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_8-115x115.jpg 115w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_8.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a>ot to be missed.\u00a0 She walked out in a blue romper and a garland of orange lillies around her head and proceeded to belt out her songs with a voice much to large for her tiny stature.\u00a0 It was surreal and amazing.\u00a0 Check out her music, you&#8217;ll enjoy it.<\/p>\n<p>After the first act, the black cloths covering ambiguous piles on the stage were taken away, they revealed the oddest set we had seen.\u00a0 The instruments were obscured by random objects; part of a tricycle, a hockey mask, lights, florescent tubing, one of the band members brought out a television, turned it on and stepped back.\u00a0 On the screen there was a morose looking fellow with a bloody nose.\u00a0 He stayed there the entire set.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_0096.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-880\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_0096-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_0096-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_0096-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_0096-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_0096-115x115.jpg 115w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wdcvfm\/files\/2011\/06\/IMG_0096.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The band stepped out and the backdrop lit up to reveal a constellation pattern.
