{"id":867,"date":"2020-04-30T02:14:23","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T02:14:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/?p=867"},"modified":"2020-04-30T02:14:23","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T02:14:23","slug":"saltwater-steam-and-solar-power-the-trifecta-for-clean-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/2020\/04\/30\/saltwater-steam-and-solar-power-the-trifecta-for-clean-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Saltwater, Steam, and Solar Power: The Trifecta for Clean Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Climate change continues to be at the forefront of many scientific endeavors, and so too does the ever-approaching threat of freshwater shortages.\u00a0 Modern technology is able to convert polluted and salt-filled water into drinkable water, but this is often a costly process in terms of money and environmental impact.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;By 2040, with the existing climate change scenario, one in four of the world&#8217;s children under 18 will be living in areas of high water scarcity.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_872\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-872\" class=\"wp-image-872 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/files\/2020\/04\/4402445308_287fe8d5bc.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/files\/2020\/04\/4402445308_287fe8d5bc.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/files\/2020\/04\/4402445308_287fe8d5bc-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Picture courtesy of Creative Commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In an effort to combat this, a team of Swedish and Finnish chemical engineers proposes an efficient steam generator made from cheap and natural materials.\u00a0 The steam generator is able to purify and desalinate water; in other words, salt and other impurities can be extracted to convert non-drinking water into a reliable source of clean, and thus drinkable, water.<\/p>\n<p>The steam generator operates using a complex combination of solar energy and aerogel.\u00a0 The primary purpose of both is to achieve the highest evaporation rate possible without breaking the bank.\u00a0 They briefly investigated the differences in machine efficiency based on the material used to absorb solar energy but were ultimately left with more questions than answers.\u00a0 As to be expected, the more expensive organic-based evaporators reliably produced higher rates of water evaporation than the chapter inorganic materials.\u00a0 The only solution they could find to combat this discrepancy was to use significantly more of the inorganic material.<\/p>\n<p>However, this disregards the original purpose of the study.\u00a0 Yes, they could use much larger amounts of the material, but this would quickly increase the price of water purification and desalination.\u00a0 In the end, the team resolved that until more absorbent cheap materials are synthesized, the choice of absorbent material must rely on a case to case basis with what is readily accessable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_873\" style=\"width: 1033px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-873\" class=\"wp-image-873 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/files\/2020\/04\/8164351795_ac9b732843_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1023\" height=\"681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/files\/2020\/04\/8164351795_ac9b732843_b.jpg 1023w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/files\/2020\/04\/8164351795_ac9b732843_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/files\/2020\/04\/8164351795_ac9b732843_b-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/files\/2020\/04\/8164351795_ac9b732843_b-973x648.jpg 973w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/writingsciencenews2020\/files\/2020\/04\/8164351795_ac9b732843_b-508x338.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-873\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Solar panels: the most widely known method of harnessing solar energy.
